I went for my yearly woman's exam and (I already knew this) but the nurse practitioner found I had a hernia.  I will have to have surgery (darn) to correct this and was wondering if any of you have had experience with non-colon surgery during a flare.  I would like to wait several months to have this done and maybe then I would be in remission but I don't know how feasible that would be. I turn 50 on Friday and I feel like everything is falling apart!

Hi Annie,

I did have a surgery during a horrible flare.  I had strange cells in my urine, and they put me to sleep in the hospital and the urologist and the guy that puts you to sleep knew I was sick. I was very sick with the uc at that time.  They were ok with it, and just went in my bladder, ureters, and kidneys and looked around and took a bunch of biopsies.  It didn't take a long time, but maybe a hernia operation would be a short one unless the hernia was really big.  I ended up having an ileostomy a year later, but it is so much better this way.  I got rid of those horrible meds and got my life back.

I had laproscopic surgery while in a flare and also a tonsilectomy while in a flare. I had no problems other then the anesthia constipating me for a few days. After the constipation ended, it stirred things up a bit with my UC with mild bleeding but for the most part it wasn't too bad.

Annie, I'm only 37 and I began falling apart majorly around 2 years ago! So I know the feelin'! :)
