Hello All,

I only found this board last month and was diagnosed (mistakenly?) with UC during a colonoscopy.  I had a case of diarrhea, I'm 39 and have never had diarhhrea, for 2 weeks.  I was given a colonoscopy and was told without that the GI could look and tell I had UC, however when the pathology results came back, no UC.

I am taking the asacol and have no side effects.  I still am able to eat what I want although I have cut back on cheese and milk.

I am scheduled to have some blood work done.

Any help or experiences would be wonderful.

Thank,

Hello! Your blood work should help toward the diagnosis-- especially ESR that shows level of inflammation + antibody profile. Did you see a copy of the pathologist's report from colonoscopy? UC can flare up at any time so there is a possibility that you really do have it-- though a 2-week bout of diarrhea out-of-the-blue seems too short a time period to draw such a major conclusion. Did your doctor test stool to rule out bacterial and/or parasitic infections? / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 6 Colazal daily for July flare in decending colon; should be back in remission again soon)

They usually test your stool when they perform the c-scope; but I would definitely ask about the parasite and bacteria tests.

When my gastroenterologist suspected UC, he first did a full stool panel to check for infection, parasites, etc.  That came back with elevated white blood cells (I think?) which then led to the colonoscopy.  I was awake during it (was pregnant at the time and declined anesthetic) so I was watching the whole thing, and even I could see the inflammation, etc. that told him it was UC, almost certainly.  He still did the samples but he was 99.9% sure.

I hope, for your sake, that you don't have UC and simply another condition that may heal up for you.  Good luck!

Thanks for the info.

I had a week hospital stay before they could get the diarrhea under control using steriods.  I had countless stool samples and everything turned up negative.  They checked for cedif, bacteria, parasites.  I had an MRI where they could see severe inflammation and the colonoscopy confirmed that.

My Mom had Lupus and my sister MS both autoimmune diseases as is UC which makes me nervous.

Thank you for all your help.

LadyBug

How many biopsies did they take of your colon during the c-scope?

I would also ask to be checked for food allergies.

And at some point you may want to seek out a second opinion from another GI.
