My doctor recommended that I do the rowasa enemas at night and not take the oral b/c the side effects are a lot for me. OR SHE SAID take my oral 2 at breakfast, 2 at lunch, 2 at night. Does anyone just do rectal enemas and not oral meds? I guess where my uc is the enemas would reach that spot. She definetly said try it.

Is rowasa just like canasa but in liquid form?

The Rowasa would not treat inflammation around cecum-- that area requires oral meds. Rowasa works well on sigmoid/rectal inflammation; Canasa is for rectum/anal areas. It sounds like your doctor is giving good advice re dividing your oral med into 3 daily doses of 2 capsules. I'm taking 6 Colazal daily in 3 X 2 doses & that works well for me. I drink some water hourly to avoid dry mouth, otherwise no side effects on current regimen, TG. / Old Hat

You are thinking of stopping Colazal again? If you do please taper! I ended up in a nasty flare when I quit taking it cold turkey. I always thought that rectal meds were in addition to oral ones. When I was flaring a took 9 colazal....3-3xs/day.

My UC is in the last 25cm of my colon. When first diagnosed, my GI put me on Salofalk enemas (same as Rowasa) and no oral medication. The bleeding stopped after 2 weeks of nightly use at which time I tapered to every other night. This worked for about 5 or 6 months without taking any oral meds.

Oh for sure I'm going to taper. Trust me it's a nice thought to do just rectal med, but I want to first try the 2,2,2 and see I feel better on them. I've done so much wrong to myself doing it my way, I don't want to mess up this time.

What do you recommend as far as tapering?

I went from 9 colazal to 6. I dropped one a month. Doing it 2/2/2 will help keep the amount of medicine in your body consistent. I am suprised your GI isn't have you do 9 if you are flaring.
