I have strange throbbing pain under my left breast where my ribcage starts. It lasts for 3-5 minutes
I have shortness of breath

I am on 16 pills of Salofalk a day, and rectal suspension one a night

I had a test for my heart done and an ultrasound for vital organs (came out normal)

anyone else have similar pain?

When did you start the Salofalk oral and rectal meds?

What other meds are you on? How often do you get the pains?

Yes, I had a similar experience a couple months ago. I asked my doctor about it and they did nothing...no tests, no nothing. I didn't really have any shortness of breath (except it would hurt to inhale when the pains happened), just the strange sharp chest pains that would last anywhere from 1 minute to about 45 minutes once...usually it was just a few minutes and it would happen 1-3 times a day, but some days not at all. Sorry, I don't know what caused it...but I was also on Asacol, 12 pills/day and Rowasa, once daily...I think those are the same meds as you, just different brands. Mine eventually went away after happening off and on for a couple months. Let me know if you figure out what's causing it.

Diagnosed with UC March 2007
Current inflamation in the rectum
Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day
Rowasa (generic) - nightly
Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri 1/day; Chewable multivitamin

I am having really bad chest pain at the minute which i believe is coming from a stomach ulcer. The pain is in the same area you describe. It is also painful in the same area in my back, so that is why i believe its a nasty ulcer. My Doctor started me on Zoton last week to see if it helps.
No chest pain should be neglected, get checked out thoroughly. I know my chest pain has been really intense at times, and it was re assuring to get my doctor to confirm that he too believes it is coming from my stomach.
Good Luck and Feel Good

Did the doc take blood tests to check for pancreas enzymes...or as Marty's situation, maybe it's an upper gastro ulcer.

It could also be anxiety, but that's not to say it wouldn't have to be checked into rather than be assumed.

Have you had a chest x-ray done as well?

Wow.. I have a very similar situation. Well, i'm not new here I have other posts... but it all started with a muscle spasm that kinda freaked me out.. it happened along with sharp chest pains, bruising pain it felt like in my back at times and right in my ab area.. I've been in and out of the hospital, blood tests, x-ray, and sonogram.. everything NORMAL. which is great! Only, the pain was still there. I started noticiting  twitching under my left rib and pain... and I would get shortness of breath. All day at work if felt like "I had shortness of breath. It seems like when it twitches, my breathing is like...limited i guess. (for lack of better word) I went to the hospital last night and had to give them stool samples, they think it could be IBS, or maybe an ulcer. I would even wake up at night or even when I'm just trying to take a nap before work, and It would almost feel like I would stop breathing, and would have to get up and take a deep breath. kind of scary when that happens. It does suck not knowing what is wrong... this has been going on for a couple of months now.. I'm just impatiently waiting for my results to come back from my sample.. I'm actually hoping it's an ulcer or something so I can get it treated and get on with my life!! Anyway if your going through this as well, it'd be great to have someone to relate to.. the shortness of breath doesn't seem like anxiety. it seriously feels like y body is not getting enough oxygen.. idk, I just pray it goes away

The shortness of breath can also be coming from the ulcer, as acid builds and comes up your throat it can cause narrowing of your airways. The pain i am having from my ulcer is exactly inthe same area you describe. I also have spasms in this area that i believe are coming from my oesophagus.

Thx Marty for the reply, and Dakotagirl. I'm still waiting for the results, I have an appt. in the morning! They gave me prilosec until they know for sure what it is I guess. They gave me 30 pills. They said if everything turns up "normal" they'll have to send me to internal medicine. I live in a .. "village" so if it were something serious, the hospital sends people out to the city where we can get better care. I'll have to look up GERD, the doctors haven't mentioned that. I feel like a hypochondriac....but i know something is not right.

I had chest pain for a few days last week.  It went away, and I don't know why or how or anything, I can only assume it's related to UC.  I'm on Colazal, Rowasa, and Prednisone, along with a handful of vitamins, so I'm really not sure about it.  It was definitely scary, but I didn't see a doctor about it, especially since it went away.  I think I'll mention it to my doctor when I talk to him next, though.  I feel so helpless almost, because I don't know what's going on inside me, and I don't know anything about prescriptions or how to deal with them.  I'm hoping to get it under control soon, though, I can't let this keep getting me down.

Sorry to digress.

Oh all you people are so lovely, thank you for your responses. I will take the time to respond back…

quincy- I started salofalk in JAN of this year (4 pills a day) I kept getting worse. So my GI (Obviously has no clue or maybe just wants to use the conservative method) just kept increasing my pill intake!! Now I am at 16 a day ridiculous! Put me on Imuran ATLEAST!

I started the rectal suspension last week (I dunno just doesn’t seem to be helping)

Other meds are just tyleonol one a day that’s it. And the chest pains are SO random (once at night once in the middle of the day?) I am not doing any vigorous exercize either.

Im going for the chest xray today. The WBC count after my blood test was high and I had a colonoscopy done just last week showing my GI that I have moderate to severe UC

Sara14- I am going to the doctors today for a chest x-ray now. I read on the internet there could be many causes of it, however a side effect (rare) of salofalk IS chest pain and shortness of breath (That’s exactly what I feel its hard to breathe in deep when I have the pain- I was confused if that meant shortness of breath infact it’s exactly what it meant)

I will keep you posted about this as to whats happeneing.

fatboyslim- OMG It lasted 45 minutes???? Why were you NOT in emerg? Mine thank god didn’t last that long however the after effect makes that area feel very tender. I also get back pains but not in that same area. Please for my sake go get checked out okay! I hope u feel better, don’t EVER have this pain lasting more than 15 minutes go to emerg im serious.

Newmother- I also pray for you that it goes away. Are you on any meds? See for me I already am going through a crazy flare up right now, in flare ups of UC is it common to have these chest spasms? They feel like a heart attack kinda don’t they? Cuz they are so close to the heart! So maybe after the chest x-ray I will ask to give a stool sample, See what they can do. Are you tender in that area as well? How long did yours last?

foxieloxy- What meds are you taking? And are u also going through a flare up?

I have chest pains every so often as well, but I believe it's caused by the increased blood pressure from the prednisone.  My bp is usually 110/80, but can get up to 160/110 while on prednisone.

This thread is old, but I am dealing with the exact same thing. I went to my family doctor a week ago, because my GI said she only deals with colons. The pain radiates from my chest, and back across from each other. I also seem to feel it in my throat and ears. My family doctor listened, gave me an EKG and said heart was good. Prescribed several things for GERD. That has been several days and no sign of progress.

Could very well be gas pressing up into the diaphragm.
Could be esophageal spasming....have that hell sometimes.

Any blood tests to check gallbladder Or biliary issues?

q
