Hello, all.  Sorry that we're all here but I'm sure this forum has helped a lot of people.  I am so glad we have a resource such as this to help us all try to manage things as best as we can.

Anyhow, this past August, my hubby was diagnoised with low/moderate UC.  At first things were shaky, but after the colonoscopy and official diagnois, he was put on a low fat/low residue diet.  He's healing quite well, and during our last follow-up appt., he was given the go-ahead to start trying previously forbidded foods.  I'm assuming he's in remission?  He's been taking the following on a daily basis:

Colazal - 5 caps 2/day 750 mg

Azathioprine - 2 tabs once a day 50 mg

Flora-Q - one daily

I was aware that the Azathioprine is an immune suppressor and guess what?  He had been feeling a little under the weather and today he woke up with a slight cold.  Now I understand that there are certain OTC meds that he has to avoid, due to the scripts he's taking, but I was wondering if anyone knows if Nyquil is okay?  It'd be nice if he could have some relief from the stuffy sinuses and enable him to sleep better.

Thanks in advance for your help -

I'll have a siggy figured out soon...

If I remember correctly, he was told to avoid aspirin and only use Tylenoyl. I think he can't have Ibuprophern (sp?). It's hard for me to remember as we've been lucky thru our lives - only needed and had aspirin in the house for occasional headaches/bodyaches. Nquil has always been the choice of relief for colds/flu. We've just never been big medication people so I'm not famliar with what's out there. We had asked the dr. about Nquil and she said to make sure it didn't have one particular ingredient, and I think that ingredient was the Ibuprophern. So I'm just wondering what everyone else takes for colds - especially if they're taking the Azathroprine and/or Colazal.

think most otc meds are fine, when i was on it i dont remember any restrictions, docs may say avoid aspirin because it can make you bleed more.

Hi there -

My doc tells me not to take asprin or ibuprofin or nsaids (or anything containing these) - not while I am flaring and not while I am in remission.  That leaves Tylenol/acetominophen (sp?), which has never done much for me at all.

They do allow me to take Benadryl to help me sleep when I am flaring, but I don't know if this would help your hubby or not...ask your doc!  I would check with the Nyquil to make sure there isn't anything in there that could hurt his gut more - like alcohol or something like that...

Maybe Tylenol PM would help?
