Yeast infection - for the ladies

Can only occational use of a probiotic give you a yeast infection?

I've been using probiotics for several years now (3-5?, not sure how long) and have never had a yeast infection from it; but, I've never had a yeast infection in my entire life, with or without.

Probiotics don't cause yeast infections, they actually can prevent them...yeast infections are like any other bacterial over-growth, and typically due to a lack of good bacteria in your system...it's important to take a good probiotic daily, to aid with vaginal health as well as IBD or IBS issues...the one I take even aids with lactose intolerance and high cholesterol.

I agree with pb4. Probiotics do not cause yeast infections; they can help prevent them. Things that can lead to yeast overgrowth are high sugar/yeasty diet, courses of broad spectrum antibiotics that kill off both good and bad bacteria, and birth control pills - particularly in higher dosages.

Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999
C-scope confirmed UC diagnosis 9/18/2007
No explanation for right side pain and thickening of bowel wall
 
Maintenance dose sulfasalazine, back on a pred taper for first flare in years
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.

Thank you! Didn't know about the birth control pills. They started me on new one's and ever since I have been having a problem every other month.

That is more then likely the culprit behind you getting frequent yeast infections, so make sure if you're taking the pill that you take a good probiotic daily (even if you're not taking the pill). Antibiotics can cause yeast infections as well.

Ooh good post. I looked into this myself and the following can upset the natural yeast balance: pregnancy, diabetes, obesity, taking anti-biotics, STEROIDS or hormones like the Pill or HRT.

Am going to try a probiotic myself after reading this.
