I am going to go get some today hopefully.  I live in NH and work in MA, so I have access to many diff types of stores easily, vit stores, health stores.  What's the best kind, I know someone posted about taking a lot of it making sure there were like a billion or something.

Also, I took yesterday off of work, with all the blood, diarreah and cramping on wed nite and thurs am I could not function.  Still tired today, think I might be getting better but am working, can't wait to go home and sleep.

Thanks to everyone for all your advice, I do appreciate it and would feel lost without this place to come to.

Thanks,
Beth

I get mine at iherb.com. I take acidophilus pearls and they are about $15 bucks cheaper there. Someone on this site told me about them. There a ton of posts on probiotics. You may want to do a search at the top of the page to see what other info you can find. P.S. I would totally be lost w/out this place too!

Hi Beth,

I am also in NH. I buy my probiotics at Vitamin Shoppe in Nashua. There is a pharmacy in Hampstead that sells VSL #3, if you ever need it in hurry and don't want to wait for it to be shipped from their online site. Feel free to send me an email(address in profile) if you have any other questions.

Many stores have many types of probiotics. The trick is to find one that works for you!

I have gotten some from GNC before. I now order mine from iherb. Wal-Mart carries Culturelle. Many health food stores carry a NOW brand - usually refridgerated.  Walgreens, CVS, etc usually have some too.  Some grocery stores also carry the pearls.

Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003

Asacol 12 per day,  Azathioprine 75mg, Rowasa and Canasa as needed
Aciphex, Effexor XR, BCP, Rhinocort nasal spray
Culturelle, Biotin, Folic Acid, Forvia, Calcium, and B12

Osteopenia (hip and spine) from prednisone use.  Started Azathioprine because I was steroid dependent.

I was the one stating you needed "billions". I am quoting some study stated on the VSL#3 website where people with UC were given between 1800 and 3600 billion live cfu per day while having a flare. I don't have any information to back up saying that more is better or that they must be live. I assume more is better and they must be live because of what I've read on the subject. VSL#3 provides the most for your money from my sources.

I order from Custom Probiotics: http://www.customprobiotics.com or Natren: http://www.natren.com

I never had any luck with the brands I could buy locally. I think many of them are not any where near potent enough.

Got my probiotics!!  Thanks Ash, I went to the Vitamin Shoppe near the Pheasant Lane Mall.  I was afraid to take yesterday as I had a wedding to go to and did not want to rock the boat just in case.  I am doing better with blood loss, but still the cramping & D & running to the restroom (mostly to get rid of the pain).  I got the vitamin shoppe brand, it said live bacteria with 13billion so reading below it was not enough (I should have written the #'s down Burli) it was only $7 (probably why!), I'll try it today and then go to the VSL3 that everyone else seems to be using.   The guy at the store said that they can order stuff for me, so I will have to go back and check it out and they have a card where you spend $ and get $ back.

For the wedding we ended up getting a room to stay at which was right near the reception and I used that bathroom it was worth the $ to have the comfort level and know I could just go and use the bathroom by myself and sit for a few minutes while my colon calmed down (plus had some cocktails and not worth it to drive).

The weird part is, I am beginning to understand from my mother's perspective things she would go to, knowing where all the bathrooms were having a back up plan....I just hope I don't go down the same road, but....medicine is advancing all the time, so I am just going to hope.

You know you can recommend to VSL3 the name of your local health food store and they will contact them about carrying the vsl3 probiotic.  That may be halpful to you as well down the road.  I just order it from the website.

love to all here

I don't know if anyone has a Costco near you, but I found I could order VSL3 through their pharmacy: 30 packets for $60.99, which is better than the online prices I was looking at ($75 or $80) without having to buy like 50 for a discount. It is worth checking different pharmacies to see if you can get a better price and if they can order it for you, so you don't have to pay shipping.
Just thought I'd pass along the info. I've been trying a whole range of probiotics and this will be my first time trying VSL#3. Hopefully it works!

I found the pills were not as effective as the powder - I hate mixing it, but it worked better for some reason.  I was amazed.  ALso Costco can carry it?  That is a great price - I will have to try mine.  Costco is nuts this time of year and I hate going there now with my legs in braces.  But for that pr
ice and no shipping that is great!

thanks for the info.

Well, call them up and get it preordered. I'm picking mine up today. Yes, I am really glad I called them... I've heard their prescription prices, when paying out of pocket, are better than most places. They must order VSL3 in bulk! surprise surprise
