can anyone tell me what the therapeutic dose is with Pred & UC?

Pred doses vary by how severe your flare is and what your doc thinks. My Gi always says to hit it hard at first. He never put me on less than 40 to begin and tapered from there. Most Gi's won't go higher than 40 anymore because of the side effects. I have been as high as 80 (many, many years ago). You seem to be on a lower dose of asacol though. Usually 6 tabs is a maintanece dose....Have you started feeling better since starting pred? What changes have you noticed in your symptoms?

Since I started taking the Pred & Asacol (today is day #4) I've noticed nothing! So aggravating!
The only thing that has gotten better since my flare is the urgency and number of bm's I have per day. It seems the only thing I'm struggling with right now is the blood & loose, loose stools. I'm hoping the blood clears out soon and I can poop normally again someday :(

I am having a hard time w/ the signature. You are taking 20mg a day? Also on the Asacol....I take Colazal (very similar) and when flaring I take 9/day. I'm just not sure you are on enough meds.

sorry for the confusion..........

Pred= (2) 10mg tabs twice per day= 40mg per day

Asacol= (3) 400mg tabs twice per day= 2400mg per day

Ya, I'm unsure too about the quantities and such. I just know four days into this daily dosing schedule things seem that they aren't improving. He made it sound like this would really get it kicked pretty fast............

Okay got it! Sorry...brain not fully functioning yet today! I have done pred. twice since diagnosed. The first time I did 40mg and saw an improvement in literally days. The next time I had to go up to 60 mg to get the same results. Have you been on pred before? I would say if you are not feeing better at the 7-10 day mark you should call your GI.

No, this is my first time on ANY of this medication.
I have to call him at the 1 week mark (Thursday) to give him an update. I guess I'll wait and see what the next few days brings me :)

Make sure you write everything down. I know when I would actually get my GI on the phone I would panic and forget half my questions. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

sorry you are having this going on!! I started pred 60mg a day 9/6 (but had to stop my 5ASA) and the pred is helping my kidney (confirmed w/labs on 10/05) but I don't think it's helping my colitis, after a month the only relief I have gotten is from taking the hydrocortisone enemas and the cipro and just did my labs for immuran.

Keep calling your doctor and I hope you can get the flare under control soon. Also, I faxed a letter to my kidney doc to prepare for my visit and it worked out really well (I called his office to tell them what I was doing and confirmed that they recevied the letter), I knew I would not see him for another month and wanted answers at my visit on 10/05. When I told my friend who is a nurse she said that she wished more patients did things like that and that it can help the docs.

today I called to give my dr an update and he's taking me from 40mg to 30mg per day. However the blood is still there. I have to call in another week again with an update. Something Ive noticed is this Pred is messing with my teeth. It makes them feel like theres pressure or something. Its weird. I'll be glad to get off this stuff.
