antibiotic combination therapy

Question for krazygirl. What where your symptoms before and during the therapy? Also why did you continue it after the two weeks, and for how long?

The blood is gone, but the bms are still the same for me. Watery, yellowish color. Frequency has gone done as well, from 12 to about 8. Thanks

hey danthaman...  sorry for the late response. had a colonoscopy yesterday.

before the therapy, i had blood and diarrhea everytime i went and i went like 13+ times a day.  lots of pain and cramping. no fun at all.

then i went on the antibiotic combo therapy for 2 weeks and during that 2 weeks had no colitis symptoms.  just watery diarrhea which they say is from the antibiotics.  ??

when i finished the 2 week round, the colitis came back.

so i asked to do a second round cuz i was convinced it would work. 

during second round i had colitis symptoms as well as antibiotic side effects - nauseas, tummy ache, diarrhea, unwell feeling...

but the 14th day i was better. no more colitis symptoms for me for another 2 weeks.

normal bm's, semi formed, no blood, no pain, and only went once a day.  amazing! 

then i went and had some red wine and a whole heap of almonds one night and the next day there was blood. 

my colonoscopy said that i have severe colitis on left side, (descending, sigmoid, rectum) and mild colitis throughout the rest of my colon. 

so i have no idea now if the therapy worked. it seemed like it did and i was in bliss for 2 weeks.  but not anymore.  lots of blood and pain and i really could just hit someone (lol).

no explaination for the 2 weeks of no symptoms.  cuz the severity of my colitis at the moment suggests that it is not a new flare.  so who knows. 

my dr. wants to start me on imuran but i am afraid as i was planning on getting pregnant in a few months.  so i am freakin out a little bit. not sure if i should try it or not.  do you know anything about imuran?

and good luck, i hope your symptoms improve.  how many days have you been on the therapy? 

I find most ALL treatments work for me... For 2 weeks.

Just jumping into this interesting thread-- sorry if I am ignorant of any older threads (initial search came up dry). I do recall once when I took Cipro for an infection I developed on an injured elbow, once, the UC seemed to dampen significantly for several weeks incl a little bit after the 10-day course. I have been lurking on the j-pouch forum and see it is very commonly used for chronic pouchitis, with many people using it indefinitely (a bit scary to say the least but it seems almost standard therapy for many with pouchitis). Just wondering if, for antibiotic therapy to work, maybe it has to be very long term? I certainly agree about pounding down the probiotics in between doses.

I'd imagine it's hard to find a GI who will prescribe it unless one's dx is crohn's and not UC? I believe officially it has only shown efficacy for CD.
