how do you know if you are or were steroid dependent

This may sound stuipd.  -  but how do you know,'
 
 
I do know that when I stopped taking it last year is when I became terrified that I would have an accident if I went any were
Diagonsed with UC in about 99 - 
Started new GI 9-25-07
Lialda 2.4 in AM(started 9-26-07) canasa 1000mg  2xs per day(started 9-26-07)
Probiotics, calcium with Vitamin D, slow release Iron, Psyllium Husk Fiber.

If you take prednisone and you cannot successfully wean off of it without flaring, that is referred to as prednisone dependent.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998
1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics
2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic
2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

Every time I tried to taper and got below 10mg or 20mg near the end of my second to last taper, I would flare. That's when my doc recommended Imuran.
Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003
 
Asacol 12 per day,  Azathioprine 75mg, Rowasa and Canasa as needed
Aciphex, Effexor XR, BCP, Rhinocort nasal spray
Forvia and a Probiotic
 
Osteopenia (hip and spine) from prednisone use.  Started Azathioprine because I was steroid dependent.

Dakotagirl--did you take the Imuran and then go on the Azathioprine? What does the Azathioprine do? Just curious-thanks!

Pancolitis diagnosed 5/07 
started on 2 Lialda/day and increased to 4 Lialda/day since 8/01/07
40 mg. Prednisone for two weeks starting 9/16/07 and tapering by 5mg per week started 9/28/07
Activia yogurt; multi-vitamin; extra calcium supplement; omega 3's

Azathioprine is the generic form of Imuran. :)
