Well, my Insurance coverage changed and Asacol is no longer on the list for any kind of price break. I was only paying $77/mo now it'll cost me $480/mo, I can't afford that. I got a call into my GI to ask to be put on something that comes in generic form. That's the only way my Ins will cover any drugs. So my question is have any of you tried Sulfasalazine(Azulfidine)? I havre about 2 weeks worth of Asacol left.

OOh that sucks. I've been there too. You can order asacol from canada for aboyt 140 a month. Asacol also has info on their website about an assistance program...just google asacol. I'vce never tried sulfa but hopefully someone else will chime in... good luck!

As long as your not allergic to Sulfa then you can give this a go. I had to do the same thing, switch from Asacol to Sulfasalazine because of insurance changes but unforunately I had a severe allergic reaction to the sulfa (large painful welts all over my body). So there was a while there that I wasn't on any meds. But it's one of those things, it may work for you or it may not. The one thing I remember from taking Sulfasalazine is that it started turning my skin yellow and I burned easily in the sun.

I was on azulfidine many years ago. It worked well for me and I was taking 6 - 8 a day. After many years in remission I got kind of cocky and stopped taking them. Several years later the flares started up again. My new doctor put me on asacol which I don't feel is working all that well for me. I am actually trying to get this doctor to put me on the azulfidine because it worked well for me years ago. Good luck, hope it works for you.

hi

a note from Canada....

i was on sulphazalazine as my first medication when diagnosed 11 years ago or so...i think i started on 8/day...within 2 weeks i had hives ++ and major swelling in my face and extremities....the ironic thing is that it was working on my flare!  had to stop and switch to asacol. thankfully, i have medication coverage so the cost wasn't an issue.

i was only 19 when i got a flare and just kept taking the pills even though i was clearly having a reaction--i'm pretty sure you'll know VERY quickly if you're allergic to sulpha---hopefully before your eyes swelled shut like mine!

good luck.

I'm on Sulfa again since my flare up in August, and it doesn't bother me, however my trip to remission has been slow.

I was on sulfasalazine for 5 years and just made my urine really yellow and had to take it w/food. My GI switched me to Asacol and my UC symptoms were the same on both, I don't recall any difference.
