Hello,

I have been taking Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri as my probiotic. Thinking about switching over to Primal Defense by Garden of Life but noticed that they also have Primal Defense Ultra. Has anyone tried one versus the other? Ultra is more expensive...

Also, for those who take Primal Defense(either), what is your normal dosage? They recommend 1 capsule three times a day. I was thinking of taking reduced dosage..but wasn't sure if that would be wise. I like Primadophilus Reuteri because it is one dosage per day, however it requires refrigeration.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the website that explains some of the differences: http://www.gardenoflife.com/detail_primal_defense_ultra.shtml

It appears the only real substantial difference is that the ultra contains Saccharomyces boulardii which is a probiotic yeast and a pilot trial study (not a controlled group) suggests that taking it help people with UC go into remission.  I am taking this particular species separately, but it might be nice to have an all in one.  The funny thing is that the normal Primal Defense (something I've tried) mentioned this probiotic but only contains the enzyme, which I am not exactly sure what that entails.  Also, one mentions the number of bacteria (5billion/capsule), but the other doesn't, only the mgs, so I don't know how they compare exactly.  With any probiotic it shouldn't matter if you take more a day (however, there is strength in numbers), only it is typically a good idea to start any gradually, because having too much can cause an initial reaction.

Thanks for the link. I had checked it out and did notice the differences mentioned in mgs versus number of bacteria. Felt like some sort of marketing ploy. My gut feeling is that they both contain the same number of bacteria, but the marketing dept. had to come up with a difference that would compel someone to pay extra for ultra. Based on your comment about Saccharomyces boulardii, I'll try out Ultra. Thankfully, I am in a remission right now and want to keep things that way.

They must have had the patience to finally count all of the little microbes.

I recently picked up the Ultra just to see (there was a sale at the health food store on all supplements). I have a few of the normal primal defense left, so I am going to finish them up and then see if the ultra helps. I've been reading more on how S. boulardii has helped with other conditions as well, which is nice to know, and maybe this particular strain will be effective (being soil based). Try and see...

My only qualm with the Ultra is that it has some sugary filler junk in it- namely rice maltodextrin, that isn't in the regular PD. I presently supplement my regular PD with some Pure Encapsulations S. Boulardi. (As far as fillers go, the powder seems to have the least- the regular PD caplets have croscarmellose sodium, for example, that is not in the powder.) Not everyone is sensitive to the fillers, but I find I can be.
