Hey Everyone,

So as I mentioned a week or so ago, the Doctor has bumped be back up on the Pred to 40mg daily  for two weeks.  It's been about 10 days now and i'm noticing improvements, but no-where near as good asthe last time.

Blood gone, but cramping still there, along with slight C . Last time I had such a huge dose, BM were back to normal within 3 days and I was feeling great.  Having 5-6 BM per day, but nothing major moving if you know what I mean. I've stopped the Iron in case that was not helping, but no improvement yet...........

I'm wondering if it's working as well, or am I being impatient?
another Question, if i'm suffering a little from C, will that have a bd effect on the Asacol as it can't get to the source of the problem if you know what I mean? (Proctitis) .

Thanks everyone

Craig

Have you ever been on rectal meds? I'm just surprised at your docs choice of meds for Proctitis because Asacol most times won't make it's way down to the area that needs to be treated for Proctitis. Where the rectal meds are great for treating that area. As for the steroid, sometimes it can go either way. Either it will work wonderfully or it won't. And some find that the longer anyone is on it, the less it seems to work as quickly. I say give it a little more time to work this time around. How long have you had C? I get that too on occasion and my doc ok'd me to use Miralax. It's a gentle stimulant to help get you going.

I agree with Sherry. If you have proctitis, get yourself on rectal meds now! They will get to the heart of the problem.

But to your original question, steroids have always almost instantly caused a change in my symptoms -- a change for the good. I've been on up to 60 mgs a day, so 40 is not an excessively high dose. I would say getting that steroid to your source of problems should have been the first step. It alone may have helped completely get that problem under control if indeed you have only proctitis, and you wouldn't have had to subject your entire system to the prednisone. I don't know.

Good luck!

Sporadic proctitis since about 1985. Mother had UC, then J-pouch surgery 1983.
DX'd with clostridium difficile in 2000. Prednisone, two courses of Flagyl, then Vancomycin finally got rid of it. Symptomatic with UC after that.
Colonoscopy in 2001 dx'd left-sided UC. Was pretty darn ill at that time, dehydrated, weak, unable to work. Treated with prednisone, Rowasa, Asacol. Asacol not working so switched to Imuran. Three small flares since in 2002, 2005, and 2007, brought under control with enemas, steroid and Rowasa.
Gall bladder attack 6/13; ultrasound showed stones; Lap chole performed October 26, 2007.
100 mg Azathioprine and 225 mg Effexor XR (for chronic, longstanding depression) daily.

My first time on Prednisone, the effects were felt that day. The second time I needed Prednisone, (over a year later) it worked in about a week. The third time, it didn't work hardly at all. I grew a tolerance to it very quickly.
12 Asacol
100 mg Imuran
6 or 9 fish oil pills
4 Acidophilus pills
