Sudden return of symptoms

Well, now all of a sudden as of Saturday some UC type symptoms have returned, or something has. I had been symptom free of anything for about two months now, and now, after eating at my mother-in-law's Saturday now the problems with the gas and multiple bowel movements a day have returned, not to mention the pressure feeling and the sticking sensation I experienced before. No bleeding, just gas low in the rectal area, and a pressure feeling upon needing to go to the bathroom. I know it had to be from something I ate that day, as I was having no problems before that. But by that same evening I was. And I ate what I felt was a very mild lunch. Broiled chicken, boiled potatoes, zucchini squash, and northern beans. I am not normally a northern bean eater, and I know they cause gas, but I wouldn't think it would still be present. As a matter of fact, I never eat them at all. Wished I hadn't now. I feel they are the culprit. And of course, I noticed the tissue or mucus type stuff being present also for the first time this morning.

Anybody got any suggestions as to what I can do about this??? I know it will go away as it did the last time. I guess I know beans are out from now on. Talking about frustrating. eyes

Are you on medication? If so, what are you taking?

I am on Asacol 400mg twice a day, 4 pills total, plus 1000mg Canasa suppositories. I hope this was just due to what I ate the other day. Not used to eating beans like that. So I've noticed my system is less tolerant of a lot of foods now.

Usually when I'm in remission, food that I normally wouldn't eat while flaring, don't bother me much. However there are still my NO NO foods that I still avoid because of the gas factor. Can you increase your Asacol to maybe 5 or 6 pills to see if that helps you?

I don't know if my doctor would let me do that. When I first took them about 4 years ago I was on two pills 3X a day. It's so ridiculous that so little amount of a food could cause that.

I'm still convinced that this HUGE steroid resistant flare I am in was caused by about an ounce of milk in a few sips of choctini I had.

Wow, a flare wouldn't be caused by that Denise, any more than a flare would be caused by beans.

But, beans do have lots of fibre in them and can cause the gut to become more active. The extra activity could definitely cause more mucus.

at witts end..are you sure you've had absolutely NO symptoms in the days or a week before that...suspecting you might be starting to flare? constipation?

Where exactly is your UC? Are you taking the canasa nightly?

Are you taking any probiotics? Maybe this is a good time to start them if you're not anyway.

(Would you mind to make a signature to list when diagnosed, where your UC is and meds you're on...at least we won't have to keep asking you the same questions over again).

If it's continuing, maybe call your doc and see if he can put you on the retention enemas..or make an appointment to see him asap.

Quincy, I am positive I had no feelings of anything until that evening after eating lunch at her home. I will try and get my stuff on here signature wise. Haven't had too much luck with doing so.

Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.

Put on Azulfidine 2 X3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.

Had a rectal flare with bleeding in 1991.

Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.

Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day.

Was taken off of all meds in 2004 after being symptom free for two years.

Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.

Had a flare of proctitis in January 2007.

Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.

Had a proctalgia reflux episode in June 2007.

Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 as a maintenance against colon cancer.

Added probiotics as part of my meds!

Quincy, I am thinking this might not be a flare but just a intolerance to that food I consumed.

At wit's end, thank you for taking Quincy's recommendation about the signature into consideration but I hate to tell you this :( but you need to trim it down to 10 lines or less per forum rules.

Probably a little better Quincy although after lunch today I was nauseated. And a little this evening also. I feel worse when I am going to the bathroom more than once a day. But so far today, I have only gone once. I guess I know I have to avoid certain foods that are not only spicy, but too high in fiber also. eyes

if it continues...I think it's the start of a flare. Give it a few days and then call the doc to either increase the oral meds to at least 6 daily and/or to get the retentin enemas instead of the supps.

The food would have been out by now given it was Saturday. Something more is going on...unless you ingested a "bugaboo".

I notice you don't mention taking probiotics...you might want to as they can be very beneficial as well.

Quincy, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a bugaboo. My mother-in-law's house is not exactly the cleanest house. And every time she cooks there are flies that light all over her table and food. And this is because she has over 20 outdoor cats and throws their cat food out on the porch and some of it always lands inside her door. I am going to quit eating there at all. My husband said, it doesn't bother me any. And I said well, you haven't dealt with ulcerative colitis over the past 21 years either. Pb4, I was taking probiotics regularly back during my past problem months ago, but quit after it went away. I will go back on them. I still have some.

cleanliness regarding food preparation is a good thing, and if you don't think your MIL is that clean...at least probiotics will help.

Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

It's very important to stay on them indefinitely even while in remission.

Quincy, the ones I have are called Accu Flora pro-biotics. I guess they seemed to do ok before.
