Fistulas - Any Advice on Treatment

Anyone have any experience in treating a fistula? I am scheduling surgery for an internal hemmroid and I think I may also have an external fistula which I thought was a hemmroid. My PCP has referred me to a general surgeon. Shouldn't I see a specialist first? Thanks

- 29 y/o single IT professional male residing in Northern VA, USA
- UC Diagnosis - April, 2006 - Symptoms were sudden and drastic
- GI did not determine type of UC as I was too inflamed during the c-scope
- Completed 3rd Prednisone taper on 4/13/07 - Tapered from early January through mid-April after being hospitalized from a bad flare with anemia & severe joint pain.
- Currently in remission and enjoying life again since getting out of the hospital in early Jan 07' from a nasty flare
- Survive on 4 Colazal/day, 1 GNC Multivitamin, occassional Fish oil & Primal Defense Probiotics
- Enjoy the outdoors, relaxing and spending time with family and friends

You may want to post this also in the Chron's forum. If I am not mistaken Chron's patients deal w/ this more often.

Yes, I would post it on the crohns forum also. Are sure that your diagnosis of UC is accurate? If it does end up being a fistula, I would really ? your UC diagnosis. I have crohns, and I have had a few fistulas. Do NOT let a general surgeon operate on you. Find a GOOD colorectal surgeon.

I would also recommend finding a GI not a PCP for these issues.

keith/chroniemomx2 - thank so much for the tips and info. i need to reconnect with my gi and find a good colorectal surgeon and check on my original diagnosis. never a dull moment with this. thanks
