I have been in remission for the first time since being diagnosed in 04 after starting remi in August! I gained about 40lbs over the course of 3 years from steroids and other medications. I have wanted to try weight watchers for a long time but always steered clear becuase the points values were based on fiber content. I have not had more thant 2gms of fiber in a day for over a year :)

I started WW in October and have seen some but minimal results. Has anyone tried WW? if so did you get good results?

Thanks,

Yes, WW works if you follow the program.  I like it because it is easy to follow.  I really need to start back up as I have gained some weight.  I have relatively mild UC so the fiber has never bothered me.

I did great on WW but ended up in a flare. My body can't do the amount of fiber that WW ususally has invloved. Now i can't even do really cooked veggies. I've had the same pred problem. I've been on for a year straight and on and off for years before. I would love to find a way to lose like I did with WW!

Oh my goodness!  I am so glad to see others talking about WW and UC.  I have been on WW for the past 5 weeks.  I am currently on my week of 10 mg of pred and going down to 5 mg tomorrow for the week.

I seem to lose one week and gain the next.  I have been told it could be the pred.

I found myself eating so much more fiber from veggies than I had in the last 6 months prior and I feel really good!  There was some gas, initially, but I haven't eaten veggie soup or spaghetti squash or even a salad for a meal until I started WW.

I didn't believe I could eat those things before and I can!  I hope I can continue and that the scale will reflect the efforts once the pred gets out of my system.  At least I can say I am eating healthier and making better choices whether the scale says so, or not.

alabamababs: I recently spoke to my GI about the bloating and gas from the fiber. she said give it a month or so and it will regulate itself. I love being in remission but i just could not understand why I used to have 15 bms a day and now i was praying for one. She said that happens when you reintroduce fiber into your diet. This has also been the first time in 3 years i can truly work out. I am feeling great. i hope that my remission continues so that i can get myself back into shape. as of now i do not feel the scale at my meetings is reflecting my efforts but i promised myself i would stick with it. The most important thing to me now is feeling good.

good luck on WW.

Tam Tam--that is good news! It somehow makes sense that with the UC, we will experience more bloating and gas and then get a relief.  Hang in there with the WW, I'm hanging in there, too.  We will have a breakthrough with our weight despite these meds!  Keep me posted and stay OP with me!

Hi!  This is my first post but I have been lurking on the message boards for awhile.  I have uc and am currently in  a flare.  I'm also a member of Weight Watchers.  I joined in July and have lost 26 lbs.  I felt great.  Never been healthier.  I gained 30 lbs on my last round of prednisone four years ago and finally decided to do something about it.  I started flaring again about a month ago so I'm back on steroids.  The good news is that I got on it right away (instead of ignoring it like usual thinking it will go away on its own) and the bleeding stopped immediately.  I am already tapered down to 10 mgs.  I have gained 1 1/2 lbs but I am still following the weight watchers plan and hope that I can keep the gaining to a minimum.  It is hard because I'm starving all the time and not for fruits and veggies.  More like chips and chocolate!  I've been really good though.  The fiber doesn't bother me.  In fact, I swear it helps.  I've never tapered this fast before and I'm hoping for another long remission!  Take care all.  Geri
