Harpo,
Did you start Liada yet? Last you wrote you were going to ask the doctor about this. I'm 35 days off meds still. I'm meet with my Natural Path on Monday next week, it will be 2 months and 2 weeks on his supplement protocol. Here's what I wish. I wish I had my own personal chef to make me gluten free and dairy free foods! Eating this way, does help my symptoms that's for sure. I actually have gluten free bread too that I eat. It's just hard to be diligent.
There's a spa in Ohio, 1 hour S. of Detroit called the Kerr House and I'm thinking of going there for a week. You do yogo every day and they serve food that is all natural, no preservatives. I just want to try for a week and see if my symptoms improve dramatically. I seem to go about one day of gluten/dairy free and then fall of the wagon. I do believe foods can irritate the symptoms.

Hope you're doing great.

I had the Rocephin shot and 2 weeks of Omnicef, this helped with my bloating and digestion. That was 4/15/07
Had Cipro and Predison for 10 & 5 days, 7/3/07
Colonoscopy & Endoscopy 7/27, Left sided colitis and near cecum (mild)
Had a shot of steriods for my ear inflammation 8/31
Stopped Colozal 10/1/07 was on it for 7 weeks, side effects
On Standard Process supplements, trying a new protocal from a
natural path as of 9/10/07
I belive laughter is the best medicine, I need to laugh more!

Lialda is as worthless as the others for me. Did nothing for my symptoms, however, when I stopped it I got worse. Not sure exactly what caused it, but I plan to be off it in a few months.
Miracles, I have two SUPER great cookbooks called "Grain-Free Gourmet" and "Eat Well, Feel Well" both available on Amazon and at B&N. Granted you have to cook it all yourself, but you can make it in bulk and freeze it. It's the scd, so it's grain and dairy free. Really good food. Makes it all VERY doable! I was dying before I found them, and the first month I had them I gained a ton of weight!
dx 4/05 with pancolitis UC after birth of my second child... meds worked randomly
SCD and vit e enema remission for 18 months and had another drug free baby 10/06
Let flare get out of control and even steroids wouldn't work 7/07 - docs wanted surgery
lialda x4 daily and started remicade 10/26/07

I seemed to get worse as well.. But I stuck through it and all seems to be on mend at this point.. I think its a standard reaction when you come off an anti-inflammant..

A couple of things, one it's snowing here in northern michigan! Yikes it's too soon!

I'm going to a retreat where they cook your meals (5 night/6 day) all natural, no preservatives, colors or dyes. You can ask for gluten free and dairy free all week long. I want to see if diet has a lot to do with the symptoms. There's other accommadations as well. It's called the Kerr House and they only take 8 people at a time. It's suppose to be very theraputic. It's been in numerous magazines and on Good Morning America for being one of the top spas.

I'm noticing some symptoms now being off the medication. It's been a month, but you wrote (Harpo) you do seem to be worse when you get off the anti inflammatories and what, you hope that your body corrects itself? I hope so too. I met with my natural path on Monday so I will see what he recommends. Harpo what symptoms are you experiencing now? I'm a little freaked about the post where if you don't control the inflammation your at higher risk for colon cancer.

My friend who's been on pentasa for a year and half is now down to taking 2 pills a day per doctors order, still have long skinny stools and some urgency. So he's in what you call remission? I can't believe basically you never go back to normal fat dryish stools with no urgency? This sucks and I can't accept that. It's so funny and I post where I see my dog go poo, poo and I say "pookie, mommmy only wished she had a nice turd like that" He looks like, what lady...you're weird quit looking at my butt and give me some privacy!

I'd take the meds. If I actually felt they were doing anything..

And i've only been off meds 10-15 or so days.. not 30.

about 30 days is when the effects of getting off the steroids kicked in for me. I think that's a good general number of when the snit will hit the fan. I was in remission for a year and a half and I had normal everything with no urgency. You CAN get back to that. Whether any of us WILL is another question. I'm so paranoid now though. I would get little tiny flares and it was no big deal so I didn't treat. This last time I got a minor one (not really little I guess) and thought it might pass so I didn't treat. It blew up on me litterally. I was sleeping on the bathroom floor b/c I was going every 5 min seriously. I couldn't have gotten to the emergency room if I'd wanted to.
And I totally do that (about the dog). Isn't that horrible? What's even more sad is that I get all depressed when I hear my hubby fart (which he does all the time). Wouldn't it be nice to be able to fart again and not have to worry about something else coming out? How depressing. I hope I can get back to that one day.
I'd go to a retreat like that if 1) I could afford it, and 2) I didn't have little kids that need 24 hour care. I REALLY wanted to go to a fasting ranch here near where I live and fast for about a month. No way with little kids though.
But I did do really well on that scd for a good long time. It's definately worth a try. I could eat anything on the diet, even fruit, all the time. Now I think I just can't eat. If I eat I get bloated and feel like I'm dying at night (but am fine during the day). If I don't eat much I seem to be better at night and have minimal bloating.

Have you guys been tested for gluten and lactose? I don't think I was ever tested for lactose (based on what this doc says the test is like), but I'm going to try and do it in another 2 months. My gluten came back at 20.07 (or 20.7 maybe) with 20 being the high end of the "normal" range. Not enough for me to flag it, but maybe enough to make it worse.

Yes I did get tested for glute, negative. Dr. Dahlman, the guy off the internet says you can have a "intolerance" even though you should negative for gluten. Yes it's very expensive and I called my insurance company to see if they would cover. Probably not. I want to go for the eating aspect, b/c I can try real hard for 2-3 days and then I lose it. I would be better off if for one week I wasn't in control of my eating habits and was served only things I could eat. Denise W. what did it take for you to be completley normal for a that year and 1/2? Even when I wasn't taking meds (like now) but this was this summer one day I was totally normal. I have formed bm's no urgency, I could feel the inflammation was gone. But the next day it was back. I know once too, I had a flare for 6 week and I saw a councel about my issues with my family and I felt a load being lifted off my, I felt so good, 3 days later, no lie I was fine. Back to normal. Weird how it can come and go and start and stop.

So Harpo, you're not on meds what are your symptoms now?

Thats me too.. I am totally fine without any symptoms except for the blood. Having been on Asacol for 10 days and Metronidazol the same, my bleeding has stopped. I have 2 BM's a day but my anxiety and stress makes me constantly think about it and obviously that brings with it small urges to go that pass right away.

I have stopped bleeding. I too would be scared if I stopped the medication and the bleeding returned, it would mean that the inflammation has started again and it would freak me out.

I have done a food intolerence test and found Yest and Sugar to be big problems so I am stopping those, I have also started accupuncture and looked into stress relief.

I think we all need a combination of better living before we start thinking of coming off drugs.

Without a doubt I think stress and anxiety and worry is causing 80% of our symptoms.

Wishing health and happiness to all.

Medical Issue: Rectal Bleeding

Current Diagnosis: Colitis and 2x 1st Degree Internal Hemmeroids

Medication Prescribed: 800mg Mesalazine (Asacol) x 3 per day

Harpo I'm glad you did what you had to do even if it's taking medication. I know how frustrating making that decision can be.

I'm almost 2 months off meds. I'm doing great. I'm not a 100%, I don't have all formed stools, but I truly feel I'm improving each week.

Thanks for keeping us informed, I was just thinking of you this morning! Seriously, I was wondering about you!
