A little over a year ago I was having trace amounts of blood in my stool and my doctor referred a specialist. A colonoscopy was scheduled and I was diagnosed with UC.

For all the initial fears I had, due mainly to what I read on the web, my life has changed very little. I have had one episode that I could not control and other than the changes from constipation to have the urge to run to the porcelain on the rare occassion nothing has really changed. I have not changed my crummy diet but I have been getting acupuncture and I have been pleased with the results.

With all that said last Friday night I thought I was having a food poisoning reaction to my Taco Bell lunch with accompanying fever. I rarely get sick and so I attributed that to my poor choice of diet. The fever broke Sunday morning but the watery bowel movements have not. It is always a combination of blood, mucus and stool but I am not getting any consistency back. I am also confused because it is not like typical diarrhea becuase I do not have a sense of urgency when I have to go, no painful gas and no burning or damage to my surrounding skin. Needless to say I am a bit perplexed. I have been eating bannanas, a bit of oatmeal, soup and lots of fluid.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is this just a new phase of UC and I need meds (I have never been on any). I would appreciate any insight.

TIA

Hi...welcome to the forum!

You're flaring, and from the sounds of it..it's spreading upward based on the fact of the watery stools. You do need meds..that's correct...but the doc should have put you on some right from the very beginning.

You need to actually eat more foods with proteins...add a fibre supplement to your diet rather than too many fibres from foods. That will help add more bulk and absorb the water in your colon to slow down the diarrhea a bit.

With the rectum inflamed and probably more...the colon will just try to expell anything and everything in there asap.

Eating smaller meals, but with that of bulk and protein will help. Super fibre foods such as raw veggies and fibrous fruits will probably give you more symptoms (because they're meant to loosen stools a bit), so can be counterproductive.

There is a diet called the specific carbohydrate diet you might want to check out. Some here are on it.

You should purchase a good probiotic.....there are a few that the members here use. I use Protec by Natural Factors as well as Primadophilus Reuteri. A new one that's been recently presented and used is Bio-Pro...seems to have great strains and doesn't require refrigeration.

Do you have a GI?

Make sure he/she doesn't put you on prednisone first-line. There are 5ASA meds ... both oral and rectal that you should try firstly.

Yes, I've experienced all you are having now before I was diagnosed.

Welcome again,
quincy

LondonRed, Quincy has that affect on people but she's a nice lady - honest! :)

Hi Thomas, welcome to Healingwell :) Quincy has covered pretty much everything but I just wanted to let you know that should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask ok?

Quincy, the new probiotic is Pro-Bio not Bio-Pro - but yes for once I am in love with a probiotic! I love this stuff!

LondonRed...oops...sorry. Too much info? I've learned a lot dealing with this in the many years, from this forum and doing my research.

If my postings scare you (I'd hope it's that and not me)..you can put me on your ignore list. I'll never know unless you're not answering any of my questions I may pose. There are some who clearly have me on theirs.

Thomas I would agree with quincy, the watery movements with no other symptoms (minus some hunger pang-ish feelings) is what came right before my flare (a week to two weeks before). Definitely see the GI.
