Could anyone tell me if they have had any side effects from taking canasa once nightly 1000mg?  I have been taking it for 21 days now and all of a sudden I am having cramping followed with d- about 3-4 hours after inserting it.  I was doing just fine(I have proctitis and have always had formed bowel movements, just blood and mucus-which are gone), but now am having problems! Could it be the Canasa?  if it is what do you think my doctor would put me on next?

I think you should contact your doc. I'm not sure what the answers are...

Hope you get an answer!

I'm sorry you're having this experience, Maddi. I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis several years ago, and my GI insisted Canasa was the way to go, even after I began having the exact same problems you're describing. I eventually stopped taking the Canasa on my own and discovered that the cramps, diarrhea, and urgency stopped, too. Then, I changed doctors. :) Please talk to your doctor ASAP. There are other treatments available that won't interfere with your daily life and sleep like this. Good luck!

I was started on Asacol (Mesalamine, the same drug as Canasa) when I was first diagnosed. Within 4 days I had to call the doctor because the diarrhea and cramping were so bad. Orally or rectally, I can't tolerate the drug. Now I'm on Colazal and tolerate that with no side effects.

Yes, it can definately be the Canasa. I have the same problem as you. It was working for a while and then I just can't tolerate it anymore. I have the same issues with mesalamines as Judy. Call up your doc because I'm not sure what other options are available if it is the Canasa. Are you still on the foam?

And btw, Judy - I am so glad to hear someone else say that they can take Colazal with no problems but have issues with Asacol, Rowasa and Canasa. I was starting to feel like a freak because I'm the same way as you!

Nicepeter,
how many inches or centemeters up is your proctitis? How long have you been taking Canasa before you noticed it hurt your stomach?

I took it for 7 days before, then stoped. But when I start a again, it hurt like a mixer after 3 days usage.
My colonoscopy results reveal normal colon. But bioposy result say it could be proctitis. I have all sysptoms of proctitis like bloating, mucus, urgency, bloody bm ect. The GI doctor didn't measure my proctitis in colonoscopy.

nicepeter,

let me know what you doc puts you on next.  I am calling my GI doc asap because there has got to be something that does not cause that many problems.
