Crap (and I mean this both literally and figuratively).  My 6 yo son was diagnosed w/ a mild case of uc back in march.  He was put on pentassa which  worked for awhile then he seemed to relapse.  he was put on prednison and as he was weaned off we introduced imuran.  well, he's been off prednison for about a month and according to the dr the imuran has not taken effect.  Today there was some blood when he pooped (this was the first time since may).  it wasn't a lot, just a trace.  i am so freaked out.  Moms of kids w/ uc, does this ever end?  every time he goes, I feel the need to look.  i know i won't be able to do this when he's older but i am getting myself so crazy.
he's on imuran and we're starting vsl this week.  should we try changing his diet?  would this help?

ucmama - we all understand freaking out at the sign of blood, especially when it has been absent for a while. However, don't totally freak out yet! See if it is still around tomorrow. It could just be a hemi or fissure. Sorry, I shouldn't say "just" 'cause those can be issues in themselves...

Only introduce one new thing at a time - that way you can tell which item is working.

Imuran can take three months or more to take effect. Sometimes patients are lucky and it only takes weeks. Sometimes it takes months.

Have you checked out the dragonpak website? It's a site for parents of children with IBD. There are some parents here and we would never, ever tell you not ask questions! However, you might find even more answers and support - especially from the parent side - there.

Take a deep breath! Don't let the crazy's get you :) Hang in there.

Thanks for getting back to me.  I think that it was actually red dye from some frosting he ate from a birthday cake!!!!  He was fine today.  The same thing happened w/ green sprinkles a few weeks ago (imagine day glo green poop coming from the whole family).
I've been having problems getting logged onto dragonpak.  They keep telling me it takes time to get registered.
