well,  when i was hospitalized for 7 days a few weeks ago, my dr. was giving me 50mg hydrocortisone injections 4x a day.

this gave me mouth thrush.  also caused by prednisone.

anyone else have this happen to them?

it is like soggy bread caked onto the insides of your cheeks and gums and tongue and back of your throat and you CAN'T scrape it off or brush it off with toothbrush.

it just sits there and is uncomfortable.  that is mouth thrush.

well, when i got home and started the prednisone as well as mouth drops Nystatin (mycostatin) it pretty much went away.  just a teeny weeny bit sometimes.  i take 1ml dropper full at night before bed.

since the hospital EVERYTHING tastes OFF. its really weird. the flavor is there in all my regular foods, but its all just OFF a little.

has anyone else had this problem?
is it the prednisone
is it the mouth drops?
is it something else?

its starting to bug the hell outta me.  i just want everything to taste like its supposed to taste. its just not right.

Sounds like thrush. Call your doc.

Ooops. Only read the first paragraph. You already know it was thrush. May still be thrush. May need some healing time to get those tastebuds to regenerate???

Otherwise, I really have no answers. Sorry.

Mitz

For a while after I started pred I couldn't taste anything really.  Like my tastebuds quit working.  I'm not 100% positive it was caused by the Pred, but eventually I got my taste back.

Pred always left a metallic taste in my mouth.

Perhaps that's it?

I can't imagine. I just know how bad it is when you have a cold and can't taste anything - yuck!

about 16 years or so ago, I got a yeast infection in my throat/mouth (I have NO idea how I got that!) and had to gargle some awful antibiotic rinse or whatever it was. It took a while for the infection to go away (none too soon either because oh boy did it hurt!). But the medicine I had to use threw my taste off majorly. Everything tasted rotten for the whole time I was on the mouth rinse. about a few weeks after stopping the rinse, my taste buds went back to normal.

Pred. definitely left a nasty taste in my mouth. Sorry about the thrush. That sounds miserable. I had it while breastfeeding.

if you can eat fresh pineapple without it upsetting your tummy, it will get rid of the thrush, i had it a bunch of times from taking antibioitcs and it sucks so bad!
the pred is probably the culprit of your funny taste though. The only thing that i found that worked (and this is complicated, lol) is to take it with something with a really strong taste, like really sour lemondade, or orange juice, somthing like that, and then immedtiaely pop a piece of Big Red chewing gum in my mouth, and i mean right away, as soon as your mouth opens up and chew it for a few minutes, that actually seemed to help me, because it kept the taste from getting in my mouth in the first place.
ANyway, hope it gets better!

I think it was the antibiotics more than the pred. If you can stomach it, eat some arlic cloves each night for a few nights. I think it only took one clove and I was better. Withing about 3 days it was gone. Really easy treatment and I was suprised it worked so fast!

i just want my food to taste the way its supposed to!

Antibiotics caused my taste to be off for almost 6 weeks. I was on Cipro, Z-pack and Flagyl trying to get rid of food poisoning.
