I had a flare up... went on pred and lialda and it went away and i felt great. Now some mornings...i am going to the bathroom A TON. It's not diahrea... it doesn't hurt... i just go A LOT and its soft, but formed. Its like i have an overactive stomach or something... like im producing too much stool??? I don't know if maybe it's what i eat... maybe certain things just make me go more???

I don't know, but maybe it's also related to the meds? Could pred have cured me so much that i go to the bathroom... or is it sorta like a flare, but no pain and no blood... just frequent bathroom?

im so confused.

I'm guessing you're simply not getting enough fiber in your diet. If you have no urgency and no blood, then it's just a matter of bulking up the stool so you don't have to go as much. Try some over the counter stool bulking products like Metamucil, it should help with the frequency, but you should also consider modifying your diet, adding more vegetables and reducing the amount of refined foods.

this happens to me too- it always seems to occur when I am coming out of a flare. Meaning, not often enough! hahaha.... Same symptoms, for about a day I go to the bathroom like 4-5 times. Soft but totally formed, no diarrhea, no blood/mucous. Just a LOT of stool! I have a theory about this- when I'm activley flaring, even though I "go" 15+ times a day, it's only blood & mucous, very little actual stool. SO I don't believe that what is in my colon is actually getting passed out during a flare- I think the inflammation & ulcers keep things from moving. So when things start to settle down, the "old" stool comes out, along with the newer stuff. Cause I definitely eat more when my colon is quiet. I don't think it has to do with fiber intake, personally. And this only happens for a day, then I'm back to my remission norm, which is 2-4 times a day, soft formed stools. Weird. I don't worry about it though- the only annoyance is it tends to make any hemmorhoids you may have flare up. As long as I'm not dripping blood into the toilet, I'm good!

Some days are just like that - at least that's my theory. Some days I just have to go a bunch - no blood, no cramps, no straining, no pain... I've found that I'm just usually happy it doesn't hurt!

Yeah, even on the Remi, I still have those days....not to be gross, but I call them my emptying out days or dump days. I think it usually happens when I eat a few big meals rather than smaller meals throughout the day. Not sure why -- but I think I digest better when I have smaller portions throughout the day!

Remicade - will have my 19th infusion on December 27.
Imuran - 100 mgs....taken before bedtime

Oh yea, as a matter of fact, I was just telling my husband today about the HUGE amounts of stool I'm producing...I mean, I didn't think I could hold that much...That happens to me about 4/5 times a week...I'm used to it by now...Soft but totally formed and LOTS of it...Sometimes I don't think it will ever end!!! I eat a well balanced diet, get plenty of fiber, drink lots of water and still the same thing...One thing I did notice is that most all of the time that happens, but some days are worse than others, and it's like I have such a large BM that it makes my guts hurt and my eyes water...Just really uncomfortable sometimes...Sometimes I have the frequency, but for the most part, it's just once or twice in the a.m....

I totally can relate to you, just like Eva Lou, I am going from total loose unformed stool to small little breakfast cereal shaped stools. There is little to no trace of blood anymore so I think I might be on the road back to remission thanks to adding more meds and Rowasa. I have had this for a day or two now so you got me excited thinking this may be it for me. So as long as its not hurting and starting to look something that resembles a BM you should be on the way back.

I now try and control my urges and going once a day in the morning. However I am shocked at the amount of stool. It is well formed but soft and loads of it. It fills up the whole toilet. Could it just be that the soft stools are just not condensed enough?

Current Diagnosis in October 2007: Colitis (Mild inflammation on Rectum, Right and Left side of Colon)

Medication Prescribed: 800mg Mesalazine (Asacol) x 3

Symptoms: Two or Three BM's a day, moderate urgency, no diarrhea or constipation, irregular stool pattern due to IBS, no other symptoms (minor Bleeding stopped after taking Metronidazol and Asacol for 10 days). Also suffer from hyperchondria, anxiety and stress.

Food is what creates a stool...so we must be eating enough at least to have large bms.

thanks guys! All of your replies have been really helpful to me. I realize I'm probably just going to have some mornings like that because of what I eat or how I eat. I think the two times it reallly happened was when I ate chick fil a the night before and one night i ate pizza. I am now never eating pizza again because I found it upsets me way too much. I too have found that if I eat small things frequently through the day rather than large amounts a couple times... I get along WAY better the next morning haha.

I definitely think though that part of it IS the fact that I'm just getting all of the stool out that I didn't when I was flaring so bad. I just tapered from 40mg to 30 mg on my pred yesterday and so far so good. I still feel great and no pain and no blood... sept for hemmie stuff sometimes. I have a lil of a bloated face, but no moooon face yet. So scared hahaha. Just updating a little on the situation.

Also.. does anyone else think it's weird that prednisone is directed to be taken with milk...  and most of us are lactose intolerant or milk upsets our tummys...      but i find that yogurt and milk with cereal actually DOES make the pred sit better..   WEIRD. hahaha

All UCers who are flaring have rectal inflammation.  That's why the rectal med "push" by me and others who know they work.  One just has to figure out if 5ASA or steroid enemas work best.
