Best thing I've ever done was to take Imuran (6mp). It took a few months to kick in but I feel better now than I did before I was diagnosed with UC! It honestly gave me my life back. Hope it does the same for you. All the best.

Hi Jennifer -

I have not experienced any side effects. I have my blood checked once a month and it has always been fine. I'm very thankful it has worked so well for me and I hope it does the same for your daughter.

I would say that once the prednisone is tapered, be wary of any sudden nausea and vomiting, and new severe cramping. I was on prednisone when I began 6mp and as I tapered I started to get sick. then one day I just started throwing up and felt like i was going to die. I had pancreaitis caused by the 6mp and spent 6 days in the hospital. I was a rare case though. Usually if the blood test says your ok to take 6mp your fine, but I still had a bad reaction. Something about me just doesn't react well to most medicines. I'm not one of the lucky ones that has found their medicine yet.

oh i believe i developed the pancreaitis at 10mg of pred.
diagnosed Dec 2006 at 22 years old and flaring since
No meds because of allergies

My daughter started 6-mp just over 2 weeks ago. This was her 2nd flare (exactly the same time as last years). Anyway the doctor originally put her on 40 mg of prednisone. Didn't really help. He upped it to 60 mg. Didn't really help. We had spoken about 6-mp but were being stubborn. Had another colonoscopy (showed inflammation, duh). Started 6-mp the next day (October 31). Ironically bratcat started feeling better by the weekend. We know it probably is not the 6-mp but after a month at high dose prednisone not working, all of a sudden she is responding?!
Anyway, for the most part she is doing well. She has some things happening to her body but can't say if it because of the medicines or the weather change.
Prednisone gave her moonface almost immediately this time. Also the acne on the face.
She did start to get a headache (6-mp or sinuses from the weather?)
She has an irritation on her skin (lower legs mostly) (6-mp or the cold weather?)
Because she is feeling better (UC-wise) and we don't know what is a side effect and what is just weather related or aches from exercising, she is feeling that 6-mp is a good med for her.
All her bloodwork is coming back good with the 6-mp. Of course, her bloodwork always came back good even when she was flaring.
I hope both our daughters do well on the 6-mp.
--Mom of bratcat (16 years old)--

I've been on Azathioprine (which breaks down to 6-MP in the body) for several years. I've had no noticable side effects. One of the cautions I've not really seen her, though, is that exposure to the sun when on the drug is associated with increased incidence of skin cancers. So be sure to apply a good sunscreen regularly when outside.

Moderate to severe left-sided UC diagnosed 2001.

Current meds are Colazal, Azathioprine and Remicade. Completely off steroids for more than a year now! In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

Now tapering Azathioprine, please pray for me.

I didn't feel like it helped me at all. While I was on it, I had some pretty extreme hair loss - even developed a bald spot - my toe nails took on strange horizontal ridges and I just felt generally unwell, in spite of blood tests being okay. I got off it.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine, back on a pred taper for first flare in years. Down to 10 mg and feeling much better.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.
