How long do UC flare ups last?  I sometimes have a week or two where I have diarrhea, tenesmus and some bleeding (usually after a few bowel movements).  More frequently I have a day where I am in a awful state and then the next day I am doing ok.  For example, last Wednesday evening I had awful diarrhea.  Thursday morning I had more diarrhea with blood and mucous present and some mild cramping and a low-grade fever.  On Friday, I was felt better and had a normal bowel movement and no fever.  This has happened several times over the past few years and I am not sure this fits the profile of a UC flare given the short duration.  Up until 2 months ago I had loose bowel movements all the time.  Two months ago I started taking Metformin HCL for PCOS and ever since then I have had more solid/regular bowel movements.  I believe this is because I have low stomach acid and the Metformin HCL is increasing my stomach acid and allowing me to digest my food properly.  Typically Metformin causes Diarrhea but in my case it seems to be helping me.  However, I am still experiencing these "attacks" where I have bleeding, cramping, diarrhea, etc.  I am seeing a new GI doc in a few weeks to try and get to the bottom of what has been on.  Thanks for any suggestions.

If you're having diarrhea, blood, mucous and fever, you're in a flare - even if you experience a day or two here and there where you feel better. A diseased and inflamed colon doesn't strike one day and disappear the next. Flares can last for weeks, months or years. When I was first diagnosed, I stayed in a state of active flare for the first couple of years before very gradually working my way into remission.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine, back on a pred taper for first flare in years. Down to 10 mg and feeling much better.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.

Hi Veebo....unfortunately, waiting is the worst part...but it's hopeful you seeing the new GI so that he can find  definitive reason for the bleeding..I may have missed it while reading, but I don't think it's a side effect of the med.   Regarding the diarrhea, it's possible that the combo of the metformin and hormones related to periods might have an influence on the cycling of yr symptoms.

I found this link on metformin and PCOS for anyone who might be interested...especially since it's a med used for diabetes.

How were you diagnosed for PCOS....do you also have endometriosis?

Please keep us posted as to what's going on.  Do your research and compilate questions so that you make sure you'll be getting the proper testing.  A colonoscopy would be the first thing on my list..with biopsies as well as stool samples.

Hang tough...

Hi Quincy,

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease (almost 3 years ago now).  I had tons of blood work and my hormone levels were all messed up.  I also had some ultra sounds performed that confirmed the diagnosis.  At the time I did not do anything to treat it as the only option I was given was birth control and I did not want to go that route.  Recently, since I am having an interest in having little ones, I made my way to a reproductive endocrinologist.  He put me on  Metformin for a few months to see if it helps out with my cycle.  Surprisingly it has helped with my Diarrhea to a point.  Because of my ongoing symptoms my GYN has advised me to have a colonoscopy to see if I have an IBD.  If I do not have UC then she wants me to have a laproscopy to look for endometriosis.  I am in the middle of changing GIs b/c my current one is awful and only agreed to do a colonoscopy b/c of what my GYN suggested (He said..and I do quote "Fine I will do a colonscopy and then your GYN can get you a proper diagnosis").  He was insistant that I have IBS but he has not given an explanation for the bleeding...and he has never checked it out.  So I am seeing a new GI next month.  Hopefully he is better because I can't keep going on like this sad .  Thanks for the support!

Veebo..your GI sounds like a "gem"....hope the new one will be a bit more "forgiving". Some just have lousy bedside manner...no matter what. He seems a bit put out that you don't just accept IBS....seems more bs from him..lol
