I know that UC is a disease and is something that we have to live with forever but my question is this:

-by taking medication does this help aid in slowing the spreading of the disease? I know that it can't cure it but does it help in-turn of not letting it spread or do we take medicine just to help keep us in remission etc?

Please add some clarification for me.

Definitely it helps....the 5ASA meds are baseline, both oral and rectal (rectal is what most seem to ignore)...keeping the colon in a quiet state is really the goal so that when it does react, it's not doing so in a big way.

Not all can use 5ASA meds....but I can share my success with them for coming up 19 years in January.....my flares have never been as bad as when I was diagnosed..the first year was quite up and down....but my last c-scope in Sept was A++ with slight redness 5cm at the rectum. Thank you 5ASA meds.

Uc progression is one of those things that many can't predict if it's going to happen or not even when taking medications. If you are genetically going to have progression then 5-ASA meds can help slow it down but even that's not a guarantee. However, not everyone that has UC will have their UC spread. Some may only have it affect their rectums for the rest of their lives and that's it. I am in the category of the people that is prone to have it progress and by taking my medications, I believe I halted it from spreading further - but once again, it's one of those things - Was I destined for it to stop left sided??? I dunno, but I do know that medication (or some of them anyway) help me from crawling in a corner and wilting away! The medications we take is to keep our inflammation down so it can help us lead "normal" lives.
