I was diagnosed UC in March 2001. I was in the hospital in 2001 and 2002 for 2 weeks each time. Since 2002 I have been through ups and downs. At present, I am taking 4 tablets of Lialda in the morning, 150 mg Imruran, Remicade every 8 weeks and Canasa suppositories (1 or 2) as needed. In addition to these prescriptions, I take multi vitamins, calcium, and Metamucil in the morning.

At present I am doing OK, 3 time solid stool, no urgency, and no blood. I can live with that but 2 things bother me:

1)      How long I can take these strong medicines? and

2)       Gas in my stomach.  The gas is so loud I feel embarrassed attending meetings.

I take Metamucil in the morning and 1 or 2 bananas. Is there anything I can do to get rid of gas? Any over the county remedy?    I did not have that much gas when I was flaring. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

If you want to try altering your diet, here are the foods that can cause gas in people. Through experimentation, you can
find out which cluster of foods it is:

Legumes: Most beans, especially dried beans and peas, baked beans, soy beans, lima beans

Milk & milk products: Milk; ice cream; and cheese

Vegetables: Cabbage; radishes; onions; broccoli; Brussels sprouts; cauliflower; cucumbers; sauerkraut; kohlrabi; asparagus

Root vegetables: Potatoes; rutabaga; turnips

Fruits: Prunes; apricots; apples; raisins; bananas

Cereals, breads: All foods that contain wheat and wheat products including cereals, breads, and pastries. Check labels.

Fatty foods: Pan-fried or deep-fried foods; fatty meats; rich cream sauces and gravies; pastries. (While fatty foods are not carbohydrates, they too can contribute to intestinal gas.)

Liquids: Carbonated beverages, medications, or powders

Personally, any kind of sugar or high fructose corn syrup gives me bad gas. Your mileage may vary.
Proctitis - diagnosed April 2007 (symptoms starting in October 2006)

Flares treated with Rowasa enemas

Mild food diet (chicken, rice, collard greens, no sugar, no corn, no beef/pork, etc)

Thanks for the reply.

Banana is the only fruit I eat. In the morning I take 1 or 2 bananas, I piece of small whole wheat bagel with some honey and olive oil on it.  Lunch and dinners are very light – just chicken and/or fish – no beef.

It looks like bananas are one of the gas producing foods. Maybe lay off them for a few days and see if it makes a difference?

WAIT....

how long have you been taking the metamucil? And, have you been taking it every single day without missing a does?

It took my system 3 months to adjust to fibre supplements once my system adjusted my gas was/is down to a very minimal amount and bloating is completely gone, you have to give it time and it varies for each person, key is to stick with it everyday and continue even while in remission....according to my GI who told me to take it daily for the rest of my life.

Thanks. I am taking Metamucil for the 5 years. I never had any problem before. May be the combination of metamucil and bananas (I take both in the morining) give me gas. It really bothers me and keeps me under stress.

hmm, go a few days or so without the banana and see what happens...I take my fibre supplement right before bed, I prefer it that way, it works better for me, you could also try that as well.

And you're taking plenty of water with it I'm assuming?

bananas in the morning or anytime, for that matter, would give me gas.

Can you maybe have an egg with toast in the morning .... protein.... that should help...and have the banana in the evening.

You know, I'm wondering if the remicade can give some people gas. I had stomach gurgling a tiny bit but no actual gas till my first infusion. It was really bad for a few days and then slacked off to just irritating. Then again with the next infusion it got HORRIBLE for a few days. Now I spend all night in the bathroom with really bad gas (even with 2 extra strength simethicone pills a night). I didn't add anything but the remicade when it started. I'm really dreading my next infusion.
And then if I eat onions O...M...G. I almost die it's so bad.  And I noticed it's worse the more I eat during the day (of anything).
I do seem to be ok during the day though.  I can eat all day and then be in pain all night, so it's not messing with life too much thank goodness.
