I just got some starting-to-thin Nioxin from the salon (haven't opened it yet and leary of more chemicals), but I think there was some pill people said they took too.  Biotin maybe?  I can't remember and I forgot to look at the grocery store yesterday.
Will the hair loss with aza go away after a week or so (like the nausea), or is it with you the whole time?
Which on do you use?
Which is better?
Are there other options too?
Is Biotin more than just a supped up regular vitamin?  I'm already taking prenatals and folic acid, so I don't feel that would be a big deal if it's just a vitamin.

Thanks.

how long have you been on the aza? I've been on it for a month now and have not lost hair but I believe my hair is growing very, very slowly (I only have to shave my legs once a week now, rather than every day....not that I did but it would need it = )

I'm curious about the hair loss too, I'm on week 3 of Azathioprene, and I'm wondering if the hairloss will stop. If I grab a few hairs on my head and pull gently, I'll end up with a few in my fingers, so my hair is loose! Does it stop? what';s the deal? And if it doesn't I'm faced with the question, is having a healthy colon worth looking like Larry Fine?

Really though, what's the deal? Does it tend to stop for most people, or does it just keep going?

I've been losing hair continuously for over a year and I don't know anymore if it's the colitis itself or all the different mesalamine medications I've been on or what.  All I know is for me, it has not gone away.  I'm on 3000mg of biotin for months and so far nothing.  My only saving grace is I used to have a lot of hair so it's only starting to be noticeable now, and since my hair is longish, I am able to style it to hide it.  It falls out and just does not grow back.  It's getting to the point where I'm considering Rogaine, but I hear there is a serious "dread shed" at first where a lot of hair falls out before the new growth comes in and I don't think if I can afford to lose that much hair at this point even though it's supposed to grow in after that.

I've also used nioxin and it has done absolutely nothing for me.

Hair loss is to be expected when starting either 6mp or Aza. But YES, it does stop falling out! Or at least it should! :) My hair fell out for the first month or so but I have thick hair anyway so it wasn't that noticable. But I have been taking Biotin 5mgs for about a year or so now and it has definately made a world of difference in my hair and nails. I used to have deep grooves in my nail beds and then the Biotin put a stop to that. Now I have healthy looking nails and hair. I use High Potency Biotin from Country Life and it's best to use no less then 3mgs (3000mcgs) or you won't notice much of a difference. And best of all, it's not toxic. Whatever your body doesn't use, it will eliminate it naturally. Biotin is primarily produced in the large intestine and when you have a lot of D it can deplete the Biotin supply.

Interesting, Sherry. I've been taking 1000 mcgs of Biotin and haven't noticed a difference. Looks like it's time to take it up a notch :)

Most definately up the dose if you can. I think the lower doses are for the healthy population and it doesn't apply to us. I started taking Biotin at 3mgs but I found I had better results with 5mgs.
