hay everyone, i was given a book today by my doc and after reading a bunch of it have found it to be the some of the best info i've been able to find on colitis and crohns. i haven't finished it so i don't know how far indepth it goes but i've seen material covered from smoking, to steroids (the diferent common kinds as well as the reults/sideeffects), to diet, to surgeries, to meds, ect.

It seems to be great. i tel you this after only an hour with the book, because i read quite slowly, and thought i should send what little helpful knowledge has come my way to you folks.

the book is called: Mount Sinai Hospital

                         Crohn's & Colitis-Unerstanding and Managing IBD.

by: Dr.A. Hillary Steinhart MD, MSc, FRCP (C) Division head, Gastroenterology.

cheers.

I had a suspected urinary tract infection (actually wasn't) and took 1Kmg/day Cipro for 10 days. It pretty much eliminated all symptoms within 24 hrs. Symptoms gradually came back after I discontinued it, but I'll use it again in a heartbeat if I think I've got a flare starting up. It worked faster than prednisone and there's no taper, so I was happy to find this out. It also prompted me to try grapefruit seed extract, which is supposed to mimic Cipro (somewhat), and after about 3 weeks I'm beginning to see signs of improvement. Since GSE is a natural substance, I should be able to use it indefinitely for maintenance providing it continues to provide a reduction of symptoms.

I bought it online.....I forget where, just google it.......there's several places. I guess you could take it during a flare, but I'm thinking it needs time to build up in your system to be effective.

You might want to look into probiotics as well as fibre supplements.
