Well I have picked up something else. Going to the primary at 4:00 today. My son has pneumonia and a throw-up/d bug. We have been at either the pediatrician or ER everyday this week. I knew it was inevitable that I pick something up. I think that not sleeping and being completely rundown (mentally and physically) has not helped. He is doing a bit better but we can't get rid of the d. This has been a pretty rough week. I broke down and had a massive glass of wine last night:)

Just wanted to also let you know why I haven't been around. Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving!!!

That is terrible! I hope you and your son recover quickly! One thing that has ofen worked for me (although it has caused problems for some other UCers) is watered down gatorade. It dilutes the sugar, but the electrolytes still get to your system. If it bothers your UC, you might try it with your son ( assuming he doesn't have UC). It has worked for me in the past...just a suggestion...either way, I hope you and your son feel better soon. Please keep us posted. My prayers are with you both.

Good idea on the Gatorade. I have been letting him drink a little Sprite. He loves watered down juice but I know juice can increase d (he does not have UC).

I confirmed what I already knew..sinus and ear infections. Going to give the z pack a whirl this time.

I know this may sound silly to those of us who are sick all the time, but when I (totally unrelated to colitis) feel like I am getting sick I take about a million vitamin C. it sounds siple, but if I take 3000 mg a day (over the course of a few days) it usually wards off any cold/flu I night have (which of course, if I get, turns into massive flaring). Anyway, just a little tip that works for me, I hope it can work for someone else.

Sorry to hear you're sick again! I can relate - I keep getting sick, too. I've tried taking tons of Vit. C, Zinc, Airborne and other supplements when I feel I'm getting sick, but nothing helps me. Maybe it would help you though.

Stupid question...is Vitamin C just a pill?

not a stupid question. yes, it is just a pill. you can get it from food sources, but for amount i am talking about it is best to do it in pill form. good luck! it's a trick i swear by!

just remember than a large dosage of vitamin c will cause diarrhea and increased bowel activity.

It depends on how much you take, how often and if you're used to taking larger dosages or not.

Vitamin C comes in powder, crystals, tablets, effervescent wafers, capsules and whatever else that I can't think of. Do read the ingredients as to whether there are artificial sweeteners in them.
Apparently, Ester C is the easiest to digest, but I get stomach discomfort and weird pains in my throat from them....it was before I was diagnosed with reflux..but I haven't tried them since.

As for fending off colds at the very first suggestion...I use Cold FX and some echinacea (swiss brand drops). Seems to help, although I can't prove that I wouldn't have gotten anyway.

I wish we would have Zicam in Canada....but there is a Sisu zinc throat spray that works awesomely for my husband. For me..yuck. The taste sucks.

Sorry you are sick. My DD is 3-1/2 and I'm always sick too so I can totally relate! I was sick for 2 weeks in July, then again at the end of August through beginning of September, again in October, and yes, I'm feeling it in my throat again right now. I will say, since taking my multivitamins, they don't last nearly as long anymore.

Hope you and your son start feeling better soon.
Best Wishes,

whenever i feel a cold coming on i start taking these vitamins that are just perfect.
these are the ingredients:

-horseradish
-garlic
-triple vitamin C
(usually has fenugreek and marshmellow in it as well)

kills any cold right away and if you take it too late to nip it in the bud thats okay..it still helps heaps.
it gets rid of all the snot and congestion and gets you better quicker!

i swear by it.
only thing is when i was in the states visiting my parents, we couldnt find it anywhere. they have it here in australia but dont know about in the US.
so you can get them separate and take them i guess. i did when i was there and it worked.

echinacea doesnt work like that. it is a preventive type thing. you have to always take it on a regular basis. it doesnt help to take when you feel sick or a cold coming. its all hype that one. (in my opinion)
