I don't recall going through that myself

I would obviously check with your doctor

Are you only supposed to take 1 colazal three times per day?

I take three 750 mg capsules three times per day. As I said I would discuss with your doctor. Make sure you drink plenty of water, if you're having diarrhea you can easily become dehydrated which can be dangerous.

Hope you feel better soon

My rx bottle says 3 tabs once daily. I think thats odd because most here are taking 6 to 9 a day. Do you think its a mistake? Im gonna call my drs office. Im still having diarrhea but not as bad. This morning i took all 3 at once. Thanks for responding!

Butterfly..so, you're improving with a higher dosage then? That's good to hear. It could be that your flare is giving you the other symptoms.

I hope it can work for you.

I would definitely call your GI when they are open. I take 6 Colazal while in remission and 9 when flaring. Colazal has never given me D but it definitely makes my bms mushy when I am at 9/day. Glad you are feeling better!

Butterfly,

Like you, I was on 12 Asacol a day and just swiched to Colazal a few days ago too. Given that we were on the same high dosage of Asacol it does seem a bit odd that you're now on a low dosage of 3 Colazal a day and I'm on a high dosage of 12 Colazal a day.

Obviously, apart from other things, the dosage depends on the extent of the disease and whatever other meds you're on. But, do you think it may be that you're not taking enough of the Colazal and that's what is causing the D?

This is just my (uneducated) observation and your GI specialist should know better and be able to offer a more definitive answer Since we've both switched at the same time from the same meds I thought I'd offer an opinion.  Hope you're fine soon!

Hi...defintely call the doc and take the lowest possible dosage that will allow you to feel better. That way....when you have active inflammation/symptoms, you can increase again...then maybe decrease to a maintenance dosage.

Are you on any rectal meds as well? You could create a signature so that I/we don't keep asking you the same questions repeatedly.

Seems the Colazal is agreeing with you.

Butterfly,

I have seen a slight improvement already on the Colazal. My symptoms before the Colazal, and when I was on 12 Asacol a day, were BM's 4-6 times a day (including having to get up once or twice at night) and slight bleeding and mucous.  Since getting on Colazal, I'm not having to get up at night and the BM's are not as loose.  However, I still have the need to run to the nearest rest-room asap whenever I have the urge to go, and I have to get that under control.

It's definitely a good idea to call and make sure that they intended for you to take only 3 colazal per day.  It seems I'm the only person around here on such a high dosage of Colazal and I probably should call my GI specialist too, to re-confirm this. (Or it could just be that your GI specialist is an optimist and mine is a pessimist.....!)

Hi,

I am one of the people who cannot take Colazal or Asacol, I have a terrible reaction to mesalamine.   Lots of pain and watery explosive diarrhea.

Talk to your GI for sure.  Hope you find the solution!

Butterfly,

How are you handling the colazal now and how has it been going back to work?

I was fine when I initially made the switch to Colazal but the past couple of days I've had a lot more BMs than when I was on Asacol. Maybe it'll take a bit more time to get used to the meds (my concern is that I've got to go overseas next week and hope thing settle down by then!). If and when I'm able to get the urgency under control I'll give you an update; but so far the urgency is still there (big time).

Well things arent going well right now at all. My son had a stomache virus three days ago, and by the next day guess what!Yup i got it!The most horrible nausea and explosive diarrhea ever! My md gave me lomotil for the diarrhea and phenegran for the nausea. Im feeling better today but am still having bad watery diarrhea and my stomache keeps gurgling. Today i went to pick up my son at school and went to the bathroom in my pants right in front of his school office. Im so depressed, I cant quit crying, i feel so hopeless! My dr released me to go back to work tomorrow and theres no way i can. Finances are strapt. Im only getting 55 dollars a day on disability and i make 200 dollars a day when i work. I dont know what im gonna do! Please tell me things will get better.

How awful for this to happen to you. I know of two families with kids have gone through the same thing....spreads quickly.

I can imagine with the added stress of going back to work and now with you and your son sick, it'll take a while for things to start to level out.
You have lots to deal with other than yourself...which I know I'd be inconsolable and totally distressed if I were in your situation.

Did your GI increase the Colazal? Are you on any rectal meds?

Would you be able to possibly go back part time rather than full-time?
Are you married and have support from your husband or other family or friends? Maybe someone can give you a bit of extra help so that you can get back to things at a more steady rate?
I hope that once you start to feel better, you'll feel more optimistic about the change of going back to work.

Sorry to hear that you're not better.  Hopefully the Colazal will kick in soon.  I can relate well to UC testing your patience as well as your budget but don't let things get to you.  I have been on liquids for the past day or so to try to give my digestive system a slight break and feel better after doing so - do you think that might help you too?

I just started Colazal 2 weeks ago and began having severe D 2 days ago along with lots of bleeding and cramping. My dr. upped my Pred today from 10mg to 30 because of it. He wants to give it time to see if its just side effects that will go away, another flare starting or an adverse reaction. I had to miss work to day because the D has made it hard for me to sit down, or walk, i more like waddle. I never experience cramping when I'm having a flare, only when a drug isn't liking me. In fact before I ever began taking any meds, I had no pain whatsoever from the UC. Every drug I've tried has ended up making me so sick I go to the hospital. I'm really hoping that this is just the bad side effects that will go away once my body adjusts. I hope its the same for you butterfly1 and that you feel better soon!

Colazal has suppositories? of course start them....they are rectal meds.

only 3 colazal daily...very maintenance, but your doc is going slowly I guess to make sure you're not sensitive to it.

Keep us posted.
