I was wondering... women... does your UC get worse during your period? Does the cramping from your period make you flare up or is it only me?

Also. If you're anemic as it is because of the UC do you get even weaker when you're on your period because you're losing so much blood? I'm honestly feeling like passing out right now and I'm thinking it's because I'm losing blood from my period.

Would Iron pills work to change this and I'm sorta scared to take them cuz I don't want to be at work and have the iron mess with my stomach... being as if I started taking them tomorrow it would be the first time and I don't know how they'd react with me.

Oh yes, the cycle has much to do with a flare. I remember being much worse around my cycle, and like you, feeling as though I was going to pass out because I was losing so much blood. Please, call your doc and tell them that you are feeling this way. I actually did pass out, much to the dismay of my coworkers. Your doc can give you some advice as to what to take. I personally find the Vitamin B-12 has worked wonders for me -- there is also a shot that can be given to give you more energy -- but still, I think you need to consult your doc. Take care, hope you are feeling better soon.

Remicade - will have my 19th infusion on December 27.
Imuran - 100 mgs....taken before bedtime
Vitamin B-12/Biotin, Probiotics

The homonal fluctuations can cause even non-IBDers to have problems around that time of the month, so yes, you're not alone.

My hematologist said women who are menstruating tend to be anemic and having UC with active bleeding - even in small, seemingly undetectable amounts - makes it worse. Have you had your blood levels checked lately?

OH YEA, boy does that time of the month me feel "Crappy"... lol... Hormones sure have (as far as me) an effect on U/C... I get more poopies, more frequent and liquid like... stomach cramps, and all the other stuff we have to put up with every month... Sometimes I think Girls really got the short end of the stick... LOL Even though I have no uterus, I still have one ovary and it pumps out enough hormones for something like 10 women I bet!! (at least that's what it feels like)... LOL

Though I have never bled from my UC I did/do have horrible d with my period. It would be so bad I would leave a 55 minute class 5 or 6 times. Half the time I couldn't figure out if my cramps were from my period or from my UC. My dr finally just gave me birth control. It worked while I was flaring. Every once in a while I still have some d issues now that I'm in remission but people who DON'T have UC have digestive issues too.
ps...women got the short end of the stick on more than just this... yeah
