There are a lot of members here who use various brands and formulations of probiotics. I use a six strain powdered blend and credit it with helping me achieve years of remission. Restoring good gut flora is key to helping an impaired digestion heal.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999
Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine, back on a pred taper for first flare in years. Down to 10 mg and feeling much better.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.

I have great success with primadophilus reuteri made by natures has guaranteed intestinal not full of a bunch of additives, dyes or anything un-necessary, only a little potato starch for preservation...they must be kept cold is the only downfall, only one/day is needed (many require upwards of 2 or more/day. They are affordable (in Canada I pay 28.00 for 90 caps which last me 90 days...they also aid with lactose intolerance and high cholesterol if you have those issues (if not it's still fine to take) and for women, vaginal health, still fine for men to use. It also comes in powder form for those who don't like taking pills.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it!  LOL  :)

I tried a probiotic VSL#3 for a while and didn't feel like I got any benefit from it.  However, there are others on this forum who use it, so maybe it has been beneficial to them.

Princess and icanrace, would it be possible to post the exact brand/manufacturer names for the probiotics that you are using? (I did a search for pro bio and many different kinds of probiotics came up). Thanks.

Rio, 31 yr old male - diagnosed with UC in 07/2006.
Alternative therapies for several months (SCD, ayurvedic treatment, VSL#3): didn't work and became anaemic. Canasa, 2 daily: remission for a month then flared-up.
07/07-11/07: 4800mg Asacol (6 x 400mg, twice a day) & Aloe Elite.
Completed first (6-week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
Currently on: 12 x 750mg Colazal (6 - twice a day).
Diet: Cut out caffeine and alcohol after diagnosis.  Been vegetarian for many years.  Low dairy, low carb, and avoiding foods that are processed, fried, spicy, acid forming, fungal, contain yeast (i.e. I don't have a life, but desperate times call for desperate measures!).
