Do soft stools and diarrhoea always mean a flare?

Initially, after 5 days of taking Metronidazol and 5ASA, my bleeding stopped totally, I saw no blood on tissue or in the toilet or on the stools. I have been totally fine (except for the anxiety) ever since. My anxiety does cause IBS and I haven't had a great few weeks with that so it is difficult to know whether it is IBS or if it is my Colitis.

Two weeks ago I got one bout of severre diarrhoea which stopped after taking one dose of Imodium so it must have been something I ate. These last two days I have been getting more frequent BM's ie 3 a day as opposed to 1 or 2 and my stools are less formed, they are soft and flaky but just short of diarrhoea but no blood. I can even see some undigested food particles. I eat a lot of spicy food but never have to wake up at night for a BM so maybe it is a mental thing when I am anxious?

I have non specific colitis which I am finding difficult to control due to my anxiety and IBS, I also keep feeling a tingling sensation (not pain) in my rectum and am wonderng if that is inflammation.

Should I be worried?

I am in sort of the same boat, albeit with a dx of UC. As I reduce prednisone I get increased frequency and chronic severity of pain, and more frequent urgency even though this doesn't correlate with any visible inflammation in scopes. But if I am not careful, the next thing you know I am actually flaring with B. Over the years, no doctor has come up with an explanation for this pain and D without inflamation except for IBS, and my take on the dx of IBS is that it is empty and meaningless, sort of a doctor's way of throwing up their hands and admitting they don't have a clue.

My own private but not scientifically based belief is that this pain can be a sign of some underlying, deeper inflammation within the tissues that doesn't show up at the mucosa, but maybe I am off base - I don't know. It makes me very, very careful of tapering my pred as I come down below my previous "walls" though.

Hmmm...I have different kind of poops everyday! Colazal also tends to make my bms mushy (I wonder if Asacol is having the same effect). I too have IBS which does give me diarhea. I think you should wait it out a couple more days. Why are you taking 3 Asacol a day? I take 9/Colazal a day when flaring and 6 when in remission. To me that # seems a bit low.

I am taking 6 Asocal a day (2 three times a day) and they are for inflammation ie Colitis. I seriously think my diarrhoea is due to the stuff I eat... e.g. Bread, Rice and Sugar.

Diagnosis in October 2007: Non Specific Colitis (Mild inflammation on Rectum, Plus some patchy inflammation on Right and Left side of Colon)

Symptoms: Two or Three BM's a day, mild urgency, no diarrhea, blood or constipation, irregular stool pattern due to IBS. Also suffer from anxiety and stress.

the anal tingling could be from the spicy foods...which would be noticed especially if that area is a bit irritated or inflamed.

You reallllllllllllly should call the doc and ask for some rectal meds....even suppositories of Salofalk / mesalazine if not retention enemas.

The loose stool could be from foods (spicy foods). You'll always see some food particles because not all foods are able to be digested. That's he purpose of some fibre foods....add bulk, etc.

How many imodium are you taking a day?

You could consider to add a fiber supplement to help bulk up the stool a bit more.

Oh, you could benefit by using zinc cream on the outer part of the anus...if you have any discomfort/irritation there.

Not sure about anyone else but everytime i go the loo its different ! Ive been in remission since June and have days of the most perfectly formed stools and then it can be bright yellow and like slush then dark and like rabbit droppings ,Certainly keeps it interesting , might start taking bets !! lol

IF you have a form of Colitis its all these things that you will have to get used to and read your body , get to know its strange ways with these condition and i hope , try not to get too anxious over things you dont need to worry about too much . I understand that is probably easier said than done when you are that type of person.

In addition to the other suggestions, why not try cutting out bread and sugar for a while and then reduce the amount of rice...

Just a thought

London,

I am 50 and was experiencing perimenopause symptoms (like I need something else right now!) so my doc prescribed me the timed release version of Effexor for the anxiety and stress.  It has helped with that, but the added benefit has been to my colon problems.  I had my last colonoscopy Monday and I have pancolitis, mild to moderate. I have been taking Asacol 800 mg. twice a day for 1 1/2 years now and have relatively few symptoms.  The Asacol has worked great for me so far and I haven't had any side effects.  I didn't know it could cause hair loss. That is a scary thought because for me "it's all about the hair" - I just couldn't deal.  I also take a probiotic called Culturelle and 1200 mg. of Omega fish oil capsules daily.  Before Asacol, I had terrible arthritis, joint pain and arthritis in my eyes, but no more.  I wish it worked for you, too.  I am sorry you are having such a rocky time.

Lou

I am going to try cutting out bread and sugar and see how that pans out. I only had one BM yesterday and one this morning.

Quincy I am not taking any Imodium.

I have been symptom free since day 5 of taking meds. The BM issues my GI tells me is all down to the food I eat and the IBS I probably have.

I no longer see blood and my BM's this morning were well formed and normal.

I guess I have to get used to having good days and bad days. I am lucky God has not given me a severre form of Colitis.

Thanks all.
