I am currently taking 60mg one day 40mg the next then 60mg and so on.  I am meeting w/my Nephrologist on 12/10 to go over my labs and I think/hope he may reduce the prednisone dosage for my kidney's (I think I am losing less proteins, though I still have edema) and everytime I meet with him he let's me know he has talked to my GI about my results and then we go from there.

My question is, what do you think a safe taper from where I am at now for my UC would be?  I am doing ok for now w/my UC and don't want to rock the boat too much, I don't even know if the pred has helped my UC or not.  My Neph seems really good but I want to be armed with some info when I go in.

Just not too sure how much a pred taper differs between diseases.

TIA!

I have always tapered 10mgs/per week-10 days until 20mgs. Once at 20mgs I taper 5mgs/per week-10 days until I am done. Hope that helps!

I too am tapering 5mg every 7-10 days even though the dr. told me 10-14 days.
Right now I'm at 10mg and feeling rough at times although I expect that. Coming down off it is pretty tough but I am choosing to deal with it.
Good luck!

I always tapered 5mg every 7 days. I either started out at 35mg or 40 mg depending on the flare. I never had any issues tapering and have always been abel to to get off them successfully after the 6 or 8 week round. I hope you have the same success! Good luck!

Beth, I think Pred taper is the same no matter what you're taking it for. It will change based on how long you've been on the Pred, though. The reason you have to taper is to give your body a chance to start making its own steroids. When we take oral Pred, it makes our adrenal glands stop producing it. Then we have to taper slowly because if the adrenals don't kick back in and start releasing hormones, your whole body system can crash.

Current meds are Colazal, Azathioprine and Remicade. Completely off steroids for more than a year now! In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

Now tapering Azathioprine, please pray for me.
