A few years ago, my doc diagnosed me with mild dry eye.  At first I was using Systane eye drops but only a few times a day and it worked ok.  Then I stopped using it and was fine until recently.  So I thought I would start back on dry eye drops.  Now, no matter which brand I use, it seems to make things worse.  My symptoms are a dry, gritty, burning feeling and it's especially noticable when I go out in the cold.  Plus too it feels like my eyes want to close all the time and I have a pinkish cast to my eyes.  It's not red like an eye infection.  I have used allergy eye drops in the past but stopped them because one of the side effects of these drops is the foreign object feeling which I had constantly no matter which drop I used.  Allegra seems to help my eyes a little but not enough.  So what do you guys think? Do you think what I'm experiencing sounds like dry eye or allergies?  Or maybe both??  All I know is that it is driving me batty because it feels like I'm tired all the time when I'm not - I can't keep my eyes open!

If you've had this feeling for more than a few days, you should check with an ophthalmologist. The eyes are too important to self-diagnose! Considering that you take multiple meds, there are many reasons why you could be having eye irritation that doesn't seem to go away. Take care! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Thanks Old Hat. I sort of groaned on the inside when I read your reply....know why? Because I'm so tired of doctors! LOL Yeah, I probably should see my primary about this so she can refer me out to an opth doc. It's been going on for a long time now but it seems to be getting worse now that I'm indoors more.

Red, I sympathize with you. After starting the UC drugs, I was told I had mild dry eye by an opthalmologist but it didn't bother me. Lately, my eyes have become gritty and even my eyball feels funny. and I can't wear my contacts for very long. I saw an optomistrist for new contacts and she gave me some drops called Soothe and they have worked fairly well but I find I must be consistant with them and use them at least 2 x per day and not put in my contacts for 5 minutes after using the drops.

Good luck with your primary, they seem to have tunnel vision.

Sherry....I had a major bout of eye allergies at the beginning of last year. My eye doctor said that behind my eyes looked like bumpy sandpaper. I did drops for months. They also switched my contacts. No problems for me now. As much as you hate it you probably should go in.

Thanks everyone. I guess it might be a combination of things huh? I took an Allegra a little while ago and it helped my eyes a little - now they only burn so I'm guessing it's probably mostly allergies. I just wish that my allergy tests could show me what I'm allergic to. I went in for testing but because of my 6mp - my results were messed up.

Harpo, I have a sample the doc gave me of Astelin but I have this insane phobia of putting anything liquid up my nose. I'm working on it though! I used to use Nasonex but I had such a horrible reaction to it that I'm a little gunshy of nasal allergy meds.

But as soon as my medical records are transferred to my doctors new office, I will be setting up an appt. I have a list of things to discuss with her - I know she is just gonna LOVE that! lol

The Allegra will make them drier, so the cycle of dry/irritation/inflammation will just worsen.

Get checked for Sjogren's. Hate to say it, but you do fit the bill.

Red you don't want red eyes to match your red hair do you????

Don't put it off, go see your eye doc and get it "looked" after "right" (and left) away, besides which, it's best if you get to the "nitty gritty" of it! LOL, sorry, couldn't resist.

:)

Quincy, I don't have any of the other symptoms associated with Sjogrens other then maybe GERD or acid reflux and maybe Raynauds. But the dominant symptom of Sjogrens is dry mouth which I don't have and in fact, I have an over production of saliva due to a surgery to remove a cyst on my right ear salivary gland - which the doc did warn me might happen. I've also had numerous ANA's done which showed no abnormality. But thank you :)

I hope no one minds me hijacking this for my own eye question...

The last few days my eyes have been really red and today there's a dull pain behind them especially when I move them. And they just feel....weird.

Could this be related to UC and/or Prednisone? I've only been on the Pred for 1.5 weeks, but of course I'm freaking myself out about Glaucoma and such.

I also started using a different brand of eye make-up...could that be the culprit?

I hate how having UC (and taking the related meds) makes you second guess every bodily (mis)function.

Anytime there is uncharacteristic redness in the eye and especially with eye pain, it should be addressed by the eye doc. We have a higher chance of getting eye infections because of Uc some of which if not treated can lead to blindness.
