Somehow my girlfriend and I got into the topic of the intestinal tract this morning over breakfast and she thought that it was long enough to stretch all the way around the world and then some!
I told her that I was pretty sure it was only a few meters and that I thought maybe she was talking about blood vessels or something.
She was convinced that she had heard it though, even me telling her that if you ate something and pooped it out 24 hours later that would mean it had to travel 1,000 miles per hour through your intestines, which by the way is faster than the speed of sound. There would be sonic booms happening in your gut as the food rocketed through your guts!
Anyway, we had a good hard laugh at it and I just had to share :-)
Plus, we all know what it feels like to have a sonic boom in our guts!

James...I hope she doesn't realise you've told the whole world about this now. I don't think there's anything in our bodies that would stretch around the world. at least I can't imagine it anyway.

She does know I posted it, she thought it was hilarious too. And apparently we have 37,000 miles of capillaries, which is more than enough to stretch around the world.

Einstein once said that he only reckoned there were 2 infinite concepts....man's stupidity and the universe....but he wasnt really sure bout the latter!

XP is right. If all arteries, veins, and capillaries of the human circulatory system were laid end to end, the total length would be 60,000 miles, or 100,000 km. That’s nearly two and a half times around the Earth!

Heres a link with such info

And it definitely has zero to do with relativity!!!

I think I read that the surface area of the small intestine would cover a basketball court. Its amazing how many items in plants and humans are packed and rolled together.

I've always wondered what would happen if you were to get stabbed in the stomach and your intestines were full of gas/fecal matter, do you suppose any would come out or would it make a fart noise? Haha, I just have strange thoughts sometimes... You just never see that on TV or movies, if someone gets stabbed in the stomach there's always just blood... But you would assume SOME other stuff would come out, right?
