When I was in hospital (couple of weeks ago/first dioagnosed & had just had a colonoscopy) I had terrible heartburn. I was given omperazole, 20mg once a day and all was fine.
Being a bit of an arse (or is it ass here?! tongue ) I thought I'd stop taking it and see if I was fine now. I stopped 2 days ago and felt fine.
However, about 04:00 hours this morning, I woke up with, what I suppose was, vomit running out my nostrils....very unpleasant (and a tad scary!). I nearly choked and the best way I could describe it was like the acid reflux/burp you get somwetimes when your tummy is full or you've eaten something oily / acidy. Now my tummy feels constantly full and I keep burping similar stuff up.

I've taken an ameprazole in the hope that's what was wrong & will sort it.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar? I've no idea if this is the sort of thing you get as a symptom of the UC. I must admit, I'm only going to the toilet about once a day just now and a tiny bit of D comes out. I'm eating constantly so god knows where it's going...

(Mental note, don't decide to stop taking tablets off own back!!!)

I've been on Prilosec (omperazole) now for about 8 months. I've tried stopping in but got such a horrible rebound affect. So I posed this question on the GERD forum and they said I had to taper. So I tried that but that didn't work either. So I asked my GI and he said that some people just produce more acid then others which I think might be the case for me. I am a coffee drinker and always have been so when I started taking Prilosec, I realized that nooooo coffee isn't supposed to burn in your stomach! :) I'm just wondering if Prilosec is the right PPI for me though, because I am still getting break thru heartburn in the evenings, nausea and occasional stomach pain. I plan on calling my GI about this soon.

I have horrible acid reflux. I have been on all the various meds at some point. Right now I am on Nexium. It works for me about 90% of the time.

Was this something you had before or is it another symptom of the UC do you think?

I think mine was brought on by taking my meds on an empty stomach for years (I know, bad me!).

Supplementing with a good lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic can help with heartburn and reflux. Natren's Megadophilus is a great one.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine. Off the pred and doing well.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.

i get it from time to time but since being in remission it has been much less. i do notice that diet does directly effect my symptoms or rate of reoccurence. for example, had been good with no reflux for a few weeks then had a bad diet drank tons of water and ate some choc cake before bed sun night and mon morning was the worst. i took two tums extra strength which knocked it out. so i have learned for me that if i drink lots of water especially on a somewhat empty stomach i get bad reflux...also choc can set it off for me if im not careful. when diet is good though can tolerate the aforementioned a lot better without problems.

I used to get terrible acid reflux to the point where my esophagus ended up full of little ulcers. It burned trying to eat anything. So my doctor put me on Nexium (Prilosec made me feel TERRIBLE) and it cleared things right up. I haven't taken the Nexium in months because it's expensive but I haven't been having heartburn very much at all, not like I used to. I would definitely ask about Nexium though, it really helped. Also probiotics seemed to take care of it as well.
Female, 22, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in hip & lumbar region of spine from long term prednisone use

Current Meds:
40 mg Citalopram (for depression/social anxiety)
125mg Imuran

Should also be on supplements and probiotics and other UC drugs but I'm just not good at taking pills...

I have awful GERD :( It was officially dx'd when my UC was dx'd, but I know I've had it longer than that. The only PPI that works for me is Aciphex. Unfortunately, it's another case of try each and see what works better for you. This is really a bummer when your insurance won't cover certain meds and you have to try each and "fail" them. FYI: I've tried Nexium, omeprazole (Prilosec), Protonix, Prevacid... I think that's all...

I can get away with skipping one day - occasionally. I still have occasional breakthrough heartburn. I haven't figured out the rhyme or reason behind it.

I hope you get some help with the reflux soon!
Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003

Asacol 12 per day,  Azathioprine 75mg, Rowasa and Canasa as needed
Aciphex, Effexor XR, BCP, Rhinocort nasal spray
Forvia and a Probiotic

Osteopenia (hip and spine) from prednisone use.  Started Azathioprine because I was steroid dependent.
