today I had an appointment. My doc was encouraged with my current conditions. I'm currently tapering off Prednisone (currently on 5mg) and he wants me to go down to 2.5mg for one week after I'm done with the 5mg.
After that he is wanting to INCREASE my Asacol from (6) 400mg pills daily to (8) daily. Does this make sense? It seems to me that I would be fine staying at (6) but I'm not a doctor. I just don't understand what he's trying to do here.
I'm also concerned with this because my hair has been falling out worse it seems since I've been on these medications.

Opinions would be appreciated.

It could be that he thinks you will need a little extra help maintaining your remission after you come off the Prednisone completely. I take 12 Asacol a day as my maintenance dose, so 8 pills is certainly not outrageous. We have to take so many of the Asacol pills because of the way it works. I read in a report once that only approx. 30-35% of the mesalamine is actually deposited from one dose. And, it doesn't last very long. That is why we have to continue to give it to our body throughout the day.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

You should be adding Rowasa....at least....save increasing the asacol for the time being.

Your hairloss is probably from the pred....it'll take time, once you're off it, for the growth phase to kick in again. You'll have to be patient with that. Do add multi Vitamin B to your supplement intake. Not a realy high mega dosage, however...I use Sisu brand B's.

Rectal meds....I'm sure they've been recommended...is there a reason you're not on them at all? Are you interested in using them?

interesting. the pharmacist told me Pred would NOT cause hair loss but Asacol could.

My dr. doesn't see a need for rectal meds so that's why I'm not on them.

What do YOU think regarding the rectal meds.....since UC starts at the rectum upping the asacol won't help it. What can it hurt anyway?

Prednisone causes hair loss...bigtime. The 5ASA meds can as well...but havent for me at all.

Anyway...please do the research on the rectal meds as well as pred side effects. Best knowing for yourself.

Would your doctor consider Colazal or Lialda instead of Asacol, same med, different delivery system. Lialda is once a day. I am still taking A LOT of pills every day, but just in the morning and it's nice not to have to think about taking more meds on time every day.
Diagnosed UC April 27, 2006
Remicade: 1st infusion 7/21/07; 2nd infusion 8/18/07; 3rd infusion 10/13/07; Lialda, 4 tabs in the morning; Protonix; Prednisone 4/27/06-present, was almost off, back to 40 mg; 12/1/07 - 12/29/07 weekly Venofer (iron sucrose) injections; 9 mg Entocourt EC; Xanax as needed; Lexipro, Rowesa; Asacol; Colazal three 750 mg capsules 3X day;

[2/22/07 started Imuran, off within two weeks due to bad reaction]

I've taken Asacol for almost 1.5 years, with it doing almost nothing.  Started Lialda about a month ago, and I know it works better than Asacol...for me anyways.  Maybe that would help you out.  You could get some samples from your doc and try it out.  Great taking only 2 pills of mesalamine a day.

Have a look at my earlier post "New Online IBD Article Summarizes Current Medical Treatment Options"-- part 1 discusses UC meds. It has a chart explaining the different 5ASA meds & where they start dissolving. Also gives reasons to supplement with Rowasa. This advice is based on clinical studies listed in the accompanying footnotes. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)
