This is my first post, but I'm certainly not new to UC. I've had the disease since 1991. I've got some dental surgery scheduled in a few weeks. I stay in a flare, so I want to make sure, if at all possible, I don't have an accident. The surgery will be while I'm sedated, and at 8:00 in the morning. This is the worse time for me, but the Dr. only performs surgery in the AM. What precautions can I take to avoid an accident while under sedation? Any and all advice will be appreciated. This is a great group, and very helpful. Thank you, Richard

You might try eating very lightly for a couple of days ahead - liquids or very low-residue foods. Then if your GI approves, some Imodium or Lomotil before you go in.

Moderate to severe left-sided UC diagnosed 2001.

Current meds are Colazal, Azathioprine and Remicade. Completely off steroids for more than a year now! In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

Now tapering Azathioprine, please pray for me.

8 AM? That's ghastly!!!!!!!! Can't you reschedule to later in the AM? There's no way I could deal with dental treatment at such an ungodly early hour, let alone dental surgery. I would advise you to have a serving of plain boiled rice with dinner the night before-- to help quiet the innards. Then wear Depends under your clothes, just in case. That's unless you're flaring with multiple bms daily-- in which case a liquid diet the day before would probably be more preventative of accidents. Good luck! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily; back in remission)

surely if you explain the situation with the Dr. he would be able to work with you on the time a little. I would have to agree with Judilyn on the Imodium. I had all my lower teeth taken out about 2 years ago but I wasnt put to sleep and my appointment was in the afternoon. Good luck.
