I need to take Doxycycline for Lyme's preventive measures and heard it was a strong antibiotic.  Has anybody used this?

Of course I am in complete remission, the best my colon has been in years and I have to start this darn stuff.

Dx:  2006

Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.

Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).

Added: tumeric and probiotics.

Don't mean to be ignorant but what is Lyme preventive and why do you have to take this? Do you already have Lyme?

No I may have Lyme's due to a tick that was attached to me that tested positive for Lyme's.  For that reason I was told by the Health Unit that I should go on antibiotics immediately and my family doc agrees.  Scared to start them, my colon has been soooooo good for the last couple of months.

Hi...how long does the doc want you on them?

I think taking good probiotics will at least help keep your gut in as healthy a state as possible.

Try the Lyme Disease forum...you should get good info there regardin the meds and side effects.

Keep us posted.

Thanks quincy,  I am going to double up on my probiotics for the duram.  The doctor wanted me to take them for 28 days, but talked her down to 21.

I will ask on the Lyme's Disease forum.

21 days? That stinks. I have been on & off antibiotics for the last year for a variety of reasons (infected mole removal, zillion sinus infections). I too agree on doubling the probiotics. Also make sure you don't take them at the same time as the antibiotic. If you can tolerate yogurt you could add that as well. Let us know how you are doing!

Thanks for the advice, tjf, I will stagger the probiotics and antibiotics and I LOVE yogurt, it is one of my staple foods.

Well I took my last pill today and so far so good, but am having huge amounts of gas this last week which is my first sign of a flare to come devil

I didn't bother to up my probiotics because I read somewhere the doxy will just kill them off anyway, but to increase after the prescription is finished so that is what I am doing.

The pills were making me feel sick when I first started them, but then started to take them on a full stomach and nothing after that.

Hopefully all those horrible Lyme disease creating bacteria are now dead and gone!!!

I had to take the Doxy too after my ablation for a week and it did mess with my Uc a bit but it wasn't too bad. I will cross my fingers and hope that those little lymies got zapped!

OH MY GOD!  What horrific memories this evil antibiotic brings back!

I took Doxycycline in summer of 2000 and it triggered my first ever UC flare. I was in hospital for a month with severe disease and minutes away from losing my colon...

Took 6 months of 40mg pred to recover.  Be warned !!

Back on Pred - 5mg - Steroid Dependent :-(
Azathioprine 150mg
Actonel 35mg
Predfoam Enema
EPA Fish Oils
Various Homeopathic meds
Asacol x 9
Remicade every 8 weeks  (Stopped working)
Aloe Vera Lily of the Desert Juice  Gave me the worst D !
Primadophilus Reuteri Probiotic
