I'm on vacation and my old boss is taking me and my husband out for dinner tomorrow - sushi and Thai food (they serve both).  After about a week of no bleeding and stools that were half formed, I woke up today with D and some blood.

I'm definately going to say no to the Thai food, as I had some yesterday at our holiday potluck (like a couple spoonfulls, but it was super spicy), and since this restaurant serves sushi as well, I wondered how that would be on the colon.

I'd stick to plain tuna and rice type sushi and steer clear of any of the spicy rolls.  I have been looking forward to this dinner for a while and while I was just coming out of this flare, I was planning on taking it easy and not going overboard.

Have any of you had sushi while in a flare?  Would you chance it?

Thanks!

Vicki

I eat sushi often... the california rolls. I think they are gentle on my stomach. Last week, I was flaring so badly that I couldn't even hold down saltines. I guess it depends on how bad you are flaring. I usually eat sushi when getting out of a mild flare with no problems. Good luck!

I stay away from sushi, even though I love it.  It doesn't bother me, but I am paranoid that I am going to get some "bad" sushi.  I have had food poisoning and it wreaked havoc on my UC and basically threw me into a flare.  So, I stay away from sushi and any raw meats.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

I'm vegetarian, so my choice of sushi is avocado and cucumber rolls - both of which go down well.  However, I wouldn't recommend having too much soy sauce and wasabi with it.

I've had no problems with sushi, as long as you trust that its high quality. As for thai...pad thai without nuts or sprouts has done well for me. It is one of my favorite flare foods. I have even learned to make it myself!

I've always had pretty good luck with sushi as well, and miso soup is very healthful and soothing as is the hot tea. Enjoy yourself! I'm way jealous ;)

I had my first flare the morning after I had some pre-made sushi from a local grocery store -shudder- (I was 19, what did I know?). I haven't touched it since, and that was almost 4 years ago. But I agree with some of the other posters, if its high-grade stuff you should be ok. I hope you enjoy!

WOW! I was expecting to come back and read, "DON"T DO IT!" I was pleasantly surprised and will indulge a little. Thanks for your feedback - I can't wait.

Sorry Carlow, about your first flare. When I read "grocery", I did shudder...LOL. I am confident this place that my boss is taking us to is of the upmost quality.

Thanks again!
