I bleed only in most of my flares now unless I have a bad flare then I get all the other symptoms. But once I made the mistake of thinking ok well my bms are formed, I have no pain but a little bit of blood on the stool. Hmmm must be ok - umm not so much. I ended up anemic and my GI scolded me for not telling him. He told me that any sort of bleeding is not acceptable regardless of the lack of other symptoms. So no, bleeding is not supposed to be normal. It means that you have ulcerations or your colon is in a fragile state which requires some sort of intervention.

Any bleeding means that you are still in a flare. I rarely have D with my flares... usually just regular bowel movements with blood. This is the first sign that my rectal area is inflamed.

Do you use rectal meds? That should take care of it.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

What are you using and how often? You may need to increase your dose or try something else. For example, I use one Rowasa enema per day. When I am flaring, though, I go to two a day.

Yeah, I was getting to that point where it's happened for so long you think it's normal.

BLEEDING IS NEVER NORMAL.

Don't accept it. Definitely get your doctor to give you something to stop it.

There was a time when I didn't remember what it was like to have a solid BM without blood. And when I started having solid stools again it was like my body didn't have the strength to do it because it was so used to everything just kind of... coming out with ease!!

I agree that bleeding is never "normal" but I definitely understand what you're saying. Sometimes I do have bleeding with no other symptoms. I would probably call your doctor and see if you should up your meds. You don't want to bleed for too long at risk of developing anemia.

I'm surprised how many people here bleed on a regular basis and seem to think very little of it. Bleeding, for me, was extremely frightening and upsetting. I never got to the point where I felt accepting of it. I'm thankful it hasn't been an issue for me since my first bad flare years ago.

You may want to look into probiotic retention enemas. I've read they're very effective for stopping bleeding and helping healing.

well, i dont see what good it will do to call the Dr.  I mean you all are telling me what he will.  I used colocort for a week then rowasa the last 2 weeks.  Maybe I will start using 2 a day now..I really dont want to go back on prednisone.  Not yet anyway...

I don't blame you, I try to avoid prednisone at all costs. I don't think it would hurt to try using two enemas a day, a lot of people seem to have success with that.

A week of Colocort is not that long of time for this med to work properly. Most treatment durations for this is about 6 weeks - more or less, depending on the severity of your symptoms. There are different variations you can try. One way is to use Colocort every other day with Rowasa in between. Or you can use Colocort at night and Rowasa in the morning. Or 2 Rowasa's a day - one in the morn and one before bed. But I don't think it would be wise to use 2 Colocorts in one day - though I think some people here have tried that. You need to find the right way that works for you. And definately don't go on pred if you can. It has soooo many side effects and long term ramifications that it doesn't seem sensible if you can avoid or treat a flare with as little as med as possible.

Good luck and remember that it may take another week or so before you notice an improvement. If you continue this regimine for longer then 2 weeks and you're still bleeding, you might want to use strictly the Colocort until the bleeding stops and then continue with the rotation.

I bleed every morning- I go about 3-4 times, soft but solidly formed, with bright red blood- mostly on the stool & on the toilet paper. And that's it, for the rest of the day! I may go again after I eat a meal, but it's only once or twice, with no blood. I've been dropping my pred dose, very slowly, but still tapering is always sketchy. I still consider myself to be in "remission", since my symptoms are manageable. Maybe I just don't want to face the fact that there's a problem- I emptied all my enemas when I was facing surgery, so I suppose I could call for a new script. I do take iron daily, since my labs tend to come back anemic. The last set of labs I had done, 2 weeks ago, were fine... "for me", my GI said.

It could take you months for the bleeding to stop....try not to be too impatient and just let the meds do the work.

Really....it took a long while for my bleeding to stop.

I hadn't bled for over 14 years during flares...but it took well over 3 years to have no blood with flares. The reason was that I eventually learned to treat flares earlier and earlier....before the tissues became friable/fragile.

If you're having your period soon..that will also cause your bleeding to continue longer. Hormonal fluctuations..from my perspective...will influence UC bigtime.

I would suggest you use the 5ASA nightly and supplement with the steroid in the morning...see how that does. Really...really give the 5ASA a fair chance.

I bled for about a year straight until I switched from Asacol to Lialda. A lot of the time the bleeding was my only symptom. I rarely called my doc b/c he would put me on steroids. I was unwilling to stay on the steroids for very long so they never had a lasting effect on the bleeding. Even though it wasn't ok, it became apart of my daily routine.

Bleeding isn't normal and shouldn't be accepted as just normal. Bleeding means that you have active inflammation that needs treating. There are many medicines out there, the most succesful for continued bleeding would be a combination of the rectal and oral meds.Give the enemas a while to work, they should help you.I also use a steroid foam which really helps me too.
Unfortunatly some of us experience flares that last for a long time, bleeding for long periods.Only when you have tried every treatment out there can we say that it is normal for us to bleed for so long with a flare.
I hope that you find the right meds to get this under control, we all know what its like to go though those long flares.Pain and blood seem to become normal, but it ain't. There are other routes for you.
Hope things improve

I also have bleeding a lot, which I'm currently trying to get under control because I'm also 21 weeks pregnant. My GI just upped me to 50mg of prednisone and Salofalk suppositories, which I'll start tonight. But the blood is with every BM and there seems to be a lot of it. Also, it seems to be worse in the middle of the night. I'm usually up at 4am with severe cramping, diarrhea, and a lot of blood. So what you're experiencing seems normal for UC...but that doesn't mean it's not something to worry about. Good luck!

I recently had a flareup last month. I had started seeing blood in bowel movements in July while on vacation. I told myself if it didn't clear up I would call my doctor. I went back to work and the bleeding and bowel movements became more frequent but I did not have time to go to the doctor. I was off work on my birthday which was 11-09. I felt really bad that day and decided to call the doctor. I went to see him the next Friday. He sent me for blood work and I went home. While I was at work on Monday, his nurse called me and told me my Doctor was admitting me to the hospital because my blood crit was so low. I had to be transfused imediately. So, my advice to you, if you are bleeding, definitly go see your doctor.

I have bled almost every day for the past 5 years, regular bms or D or no bm.  I have a rectal ulcer.  I am now taking Proctofoam which seems to be helping the bleeding some, but I still see blood but less of it.  I have never been found anemic and I am used to it.  Once this nurse told me if I have any bleeding, I need to go to the hospital.  I would be there every day.  I refuse to take Prednisone ever again.  I had a reaction to the Rowasa.  The Hydrocortisone enemas didnt work.  I just live like this.
