Hello,

My wife had open heart surgery on August 15. We have been home since August 21. My wife is 5'4" and before surgery she weighed 124, plus or minus a couple pounds. She was released from the hospital at 122 pounds and today is down to 119. Yesterday's calory intake was about 1200, today less than 700. She says she just can't eat.

I'd be delighted to discuss this with her cardiologist, unfortunately he only comes to town two days a week and won't be coming in this week at all. It's not that I don't trust the local medicos, but they are not heart specialists.

Is this eating difficulty a common problem?

I've had two open heart surgeries as well as a few other surgeries and can tell you that after the anesthesia, I always lost my appetite for a few days.   After my first open heart surgery my appetite was non existent and the nurses in the hospital would bring me "Ensure" to drink because I simply would not eat.   If your wife won't eat, give her liquid supplements like Ensure so that she keeps her calorie count and engergy up.   Even if your doctor only comes to town a few days a week he should respond to a phone call and a verbal question about your wife's lack of appetite.

Good luck.

Thank you for your reply, Miss Helen.

In this case my wife is going on 12 days after surgery/anathesia. Even with two bottles of Boost(Ensure equiv) daily, her calorie count is less than the 1500 she needs just to maintain weight. We see the doctor today and I'm expecting some sort of answer or fix to the problem.
