Last month I had an echo and the results of that showed that my aorta had closed from 10cm to 7.9cm. It was suggested that I have a heart cath. and I did have that done which showed that the results of the echo were not quite accurate, showing more than 10cm by the heart cath. Yesterday when I went to the heart doctors office for followup after the cath. the nurse practioners told me that heart cath. always shows bigger dimensions than an echo and they aren't that accurate is what she implied. Kind of a heartless lady, and hates to be wrong, being that she is implying that i should just wait because sooner or later i will have to have the aorta replaced and we will do an echo again in 6 months..I know the purpose of the heart cath.,but does anyone agree that the heart cath. is not an accurate test and give a bigger cm measurement over the echo? thanks

Both these methods can have significant deviation from the 'true' valve area, they are both dependent on the flow rate across the valve.
The cath is less dependent on operator error and is the more "direct" measurement, its questionable if it is more accurate

In my instance, my echos had so much noise in them from the valve that the heart cath was the more accurate.   In general it's a toss up as to which is more accurate.   Your physician should carefully weigh the results of both the cath and the echo to determine when your surgery is needed.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Yes..I may have the doctor do that..I have another Echo in Decemeber. we'll see what happens with that one. But you're right , my doctor needs to monitor this more closely with the variations in question..thanks for your reply..

Hi Maureenbale, I cant understand what you mean when you say that your "aorta has closed from 10 cm to 7.9 cm". What kind of heart problem do you have?
