I am 25 years old and have recently had shortness of breath (especially with activity) and purplish nails. I have had palpitations with racing heart for 6 years. The only thing they have found was during a bubble study during valsalva maneuver. My mom (who is an echo tech) said that usually means PFO. Did any one else with PFO's experience this?? I really don't have many migraines. I feel so scared and just want to know what is going on and how to fix it.

Hello mnm,

Welcome to HealingWell and the Heart and Cardiovascular Disease Forum.

Learning that you have a hole in your heart is understandably worrisome. Although present in about one in five adults, PFOs usually cause no symptoms at all. Far less than 1 percent has a stroke or other outcome that results in the need to have the PFO closed.

Occasionally, patients may experience episodes of shortness of breath and cyanosis. I hope you will follow up with your cardiologist if you are having concerns re your tests and do ask questions, advocate for yourself as this is important to you.

I hope other members who have PFO will post to your questions.

Blessings and again a warm welcome,

Kitt

I was diagnosed with PFO and I had palpitations, shortness of breath, excruciating daily migraines, tiredness.  I had the defect repaired and haven't had anymore migraines.  I am still recovering from the procedure!  I chose to have it repaired due to the quality of life I was living.  My Cardiologist said he could guarantee a normal life doing all the things I enjoy.    I hope this encourages you!
