I am new to this site. I am a 31 year old female. I had a pericardiectomy in June of 2005 due to constrictive pericarditis. The surgery was successful and my heart functions 100%. My problem is that I still have pain and inflammation on the left side of my chest radiating into my neck and shoulder. It is very painful and debilitating. I am on long term steroids and they are the only things that bring me any relief. You are all aware of the damaging side effects of Prednisone. Anyone experience this? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Briana

Hi Briana,
Prednisolone is wonderful but toxic.
As long as you take the medication and make serious lifetsyle changes now (ie low fat diet, sugar control, light exercise) you should escape the side effects.

I look athlethic, but prednisone has made me develop a very fatty liver and fatty tumours under my skin and on my gall bladder due to not altering my lifestyle accordingly.

I recommend that you give indomethacin a try to supplement the steroid therapy along with colchisine. this may enable you to wean off the steroids over a few months and hopefully the NSAIDs will do the job. If this works you can then go on to Naproxen which is less toxic still.

Theres a good book by D H Spodick (world leading pericarial diasease specialist) called 'the pericardium' this has loads of information that may help ya.

Best of luck,

Marc

Marc,

Thanks so much for the input. I will certainly check this book out. I will talk to my doc about the indomethacin and colchicine although I have had acute renal failure in the past and am supposed to stay away from nsaids. Anything is worth a shot! Hope you are well and thank you again!

Hi Briana,

Due to your renal failure, keep away from the indomethacin (its a bit punishing on the kidneys)

but the Colchisine is meant to be gold dust, and it isnt classed as a NSAID. So it is definately worth a go :)

Best of Luck

Marc
