I had a heart attack in February and was put on cholesterol lowing medication. My new blood test shows my AST (SGOT) at 898 and my ALT (SGPT) at 1240. My liver counts were never a problem before. Has anyone else had this happen? My doctor called and told me to come in for an appointment tomorrow but wouldn't really talk about it over the phone. I'm worried.

Hey there, Normal physician protocol is to want you to come in to discuss your liver function tests so please try not to over think what is going on. :-)

I would like to emphasize that higher-than-normal levels of these liver enzymes should not be automatically be equated with liver disease. They may mean liver problems or they may not.

I have never had elevate liver function tests myself but perhaps another member will have feedback for you.

Kindly,

Kitt

Went to the appointment today and the doctor seemed to think the medicine caused the elevated numbers since they were normal in March. They took another blood test today although I had only been off the medicine for l l/2 days so I don't know if it will show much improvement. And I have a liver scan scheuduled for Monday. The doctor didn't seem as concerned today as she did on the phone so I hope stopping the medicine corrects everything. I am still extremely tired and itching although it's not as bad. Thanks for you help.
