Hi all, I am a 43 year old male getting ready for a Pericardiectomy. I found out eleven years ago that my Pericardium was calcified when I went to the doctors for a chest x-ray to make sure my lungs were ok after a bad bout of the flu. Moving forward to today. I'm going in tomorrow for a consult visit with the surgeon that is going to be doing my procedure. Last Monday I had an ablation to fix my heart flutter and an angiogram to see if I had any coronary disease. Everything was fine and the ablation worked. My heart is healthy with no sign of coronary disease except for the constriction. I guess my question is can someone please tell me (the truth) how good or bad this surgery has worked for them and what can I expect after the surgery and recovery. What is my life going to be like without my pericardium? I'm extremely nervous and would like some input good or bad.

Thank you,

Gonzocyn

Dear Gonzocyn,

I have not had the surgery but I hope a member that has will come along and share their story with you.

Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks while the incision heals. Deep breathing and coughing exercises should be performed several times a day for several weeks. Early return to light exercise (walking, stationary bike) is also beneficial in healing and maintaining good lung function.

Your doctor will advise you as to your limitations for physical activities, which you will need to increase gradually in order to regain your strength and return to a normal lifestyle.  Most individuals who have sedentary jobs can return to work in two to four weeks.  Those who have physically demanding jobs will have to wait longer.

I wish you the very best as you face this surgery and please let us know how you are doing ?

Kindly,

Kitt
