Wow, I'm always reading new things and trying to keep up with modern wonders tongue especially those helpful to us with Heart Disease~but this could be another wonderful 'natural' Mother Nature's helper!

Today I read where in recent studies Pomegranate Juice is supposed to be very healthy for our Arteries!

It actually seems to soothe the stressed arteries that would normally end up becoming hardened, called atherosclerosis and resulting in plaque build up and Heart Attacks.

Realizing this is still being studied, it still seems a drink wouldn't hurt! yeah

Have you heard of any other new studies that are being conducted and what 'natural' things are being suggested?

Teri

PS  Makes me aggravated that my Pomegranate Plant died!  Guess it would be worth getting another one to plant in the back yard! tongue

I feel like I've fallen down a rabbit hole here. My parents were the original owners of their house. When they both passed in 2001 the house came to my family. This is the home I was conceived in, so it's a bit odd to be back. But, one of the most wonderful things about this house is the 55 year old Pomagrante Tree in the back yard.

Each year my mom would squeeze the juice and make jam. It was her specialty and she gave it out at holidays and birthdays and such. Unfortunately, her recipe went when she did. It was never written down and she didn't share.

I had a dream about a week ago where my mom was in the kitchen and she was squeezing Pomegrante juice. She told me to go ahead and drink some, which she never did as getting the juice from those seeds was such arduous work she coveted every drop for her jelly.

The tree is just starting to bloom in the back yard - it will be it's 55th crop - and this year I will squeeze the juice from the fruit and drink it - just as my mom encouraged me to do.

How interesting I should have this dream in the midst of this new and frightening upset with my heart.

The universe truly is stranger than fiction - and Terri - I looked up Pomegrante juice and it's supposed to be an excellent anti-oxidant and yes, there are many anecdotal stories of the juice helping heart patients. I believe several Universities are doing studies.

Kismet,

How wonderful!!  Perhaps with some experimentation, you'll come close to making a recipe as close to your Mom's with time! yeah

I personally love Pomegranates, but you are right about it being a lot of work to get the juice from those bitty seeds!

I am going to get another dwarf plant, though!

Wow, Kismet, talk about deja vu! Your story gives me goose bumps just reading it. I have never seen pomegranite juice in the regular grocery store? Is it readily available, Terri? I'm up to drinking some too at this rate! yeah
Had a CYPHER stent January 5, 2004 after a heart attack. Diagnosed with CAD and CHF. Need to care more about myself and do my exercises, lose weight and eat better. Still the happy grandmother of 4 beautiful grandchildren!

Hi Kathlyn! tongue

I'm guessing we'd have to try a health food store?!  Anyone?  I've not seen it in any local stores, but I will definitely check it out!!

Hi Kathlyn and Terri;

I've found fresh Pomegrante Juice at Farmer's Market's. Because the fruit ripens in the fall - that's ususally when the fresh juice is everywhere. But, I have seen it marketed in regular grocery stores under the label of POMS or something like that.

It's a desert plant, so places in the southwest and west coast will more than likely have access at local Farmer's markets.

Terri- good luck with your next tree. I've been told that Pomegrante Trees have a life span of 50 to 60 years, so I know a new tree is in our future as well. However, we'll be planting the full-blown large tree out of sentimentality and the fact that we have the room. We also have a lemon tree, an appricot tree and a Santa Rosa Plum tree along with an herb garden and a vegetable garden.

peace and blessings;
kismet

Kismet, I love it! yeah

Thanks for the pome pointers. tongue   We have a peach tree, apricot, Meyer's Lemon trees (in pots), an apple tree and my husband has a pretty good sized vegetable garden, so we share your interests!!

Happy Eating!

Terri - what kind of apple tree? we want to get one this summer and can't decide. we both enjoy the really tart apples like pippins and granny smiths and Macintash - but know these are only the ones which show up in the stores.

Would love any suggestions. I so enjoy making home made apple sauce when I get apples from friends and neighbors.

And aren't gardens the best? I love to cook and to just go outside and say - okay, what's ripe, what can I use tonight? Love it. And I know there are no pestisides - and nothing but nothing is as calming (to me) as sitting in my garden and pulling a weed or two.

Hey Kismet, I think the best apple in the world is the honeycrisp. I wait for them every year late September. I don't know if they have those where you live. I live in Wisconsin. The apples have just the right amount of tartness similar to Macintash I would say and so juicy. Makes my mouth water just thinking about them. Barb

Teri..Just went thru a real scare with Mom .she had no petal pulse(feet) and her carotid(sp)artery was not giving too much of a pulse either .they check this by doing ultrasound.....anyways she is frail and not a good candidate for surgery........We checked out with my doc on some things that could help with the arteries and aspirin is a given but he did suggest Grape seed.................She took 2 a day and after 2 months went back to the surgeon he did another ultrasound and said that arteries had improved. There is no way a doc is supposed to push natural meds as they are not under our Can.,food and drug act but as I said he only suggested it and for the heck of it we tried and got results..............now this worked for Mom but as we know we are all different but I got a feeling it just might do the trick ......Take care and God Bless

Hi Lyn! tongue

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom's episode~that's great that she's improved~thank goodness!

I just looked up Grape Seed and see that it's an extract, or found as a capsule...I can't personally recommend anything like that. Until now, I've never heard of it. tongue   But anyone that would like to look into this by first asking your Dr. go right ahead and then let us know~just make sure to check with your Dr. first!!

There are plenty of things out there in nature that we can try as you never know, but when it comes to something that has been altered into an extract or capsulized form, I just like to play it safe and make sure the Dr.'s are aware of what their patients are taking, so that it doesn't cause problems with what they're already taking!

Thanks for the idea, I plan to do a bit more checking into this, Lyn, I'm so glad that your Mom is doing better!

Teri

PS  Is she on any Statins?

You are right in suggesting to check with the doc first I dont know what the states regulations are with natural products?vitamins ect but here like I said the doc will tell you there is no specific scientific proof(they are legally bound to say this )and they will tell you if it works for you then all the power to ya lol......as I said it is best to check with doc as you stated before trying any remedy that they are not aware you are taking........God Bless and thanks for your comments about my Mom .....much appreciated

Lyn, it's like the CoQ10, my Dr. told me if I wanted to try it fine, but that he couldn't recommend it...considering the price and all the other med.'s that I'm taking, I opted not to try it! My Dr. said there is still no scientific proof that it helps...so I felt that I was wasting my money on it. But I do like hearing all the latest updates on everything, because sooner or later, they will probably find that something that comes from nature will be a real help to all of us!

Thank you so much for your input here with us and please feel free to join in with us anytime!!

Hugs, Teri :)

Hey Teri and Lyn, I wonder if the grapeseed is the same as grape juice? I read an article that says they have done studies and show that drinking a 6oz glass a day of grape juice helps keep the arteries clear. I've been doing it because it's cheap and tastes great and if it works it does otherwise I am getting another serving of fruit which we can all use anyway. Barb

Look out!  tongue   It seems as if Cranberries could be pretty healthy for all of us heart patients to eat, too!!  I just read that in the news today.  It's supposed to have the same sort of effect on the arteries as the Pomegranates do, by soothing the arteries!

It would seem that now Soy is being added to the list of foods that can lower your cholesterol and blood sugar!! yeah

"The bottom line is soy is healthy, and while incorporating it into weight loss may not have a more dramatic effect on your waistline than other nutrition plans, its benefits go beyond weight loss toward increasing overall health," Anderson said."

This is probably one of my favorite natural ways to reduce blood pressure!!!! Lowering your blood pressure even by a few units is preferable to increasing it by a few. I could not find anything (yet) about whether it would be healthy to eat more and thus decrease blood pressure even more, lol. I'm kind of doubting that would work. But it sounds good. LOL.

"Treating yourself to 100 grams of dark chocolate every day appears to reduce systolic blood pressure --- the top number in a blood pressure reading --- by 5 units, and the bottom blood pressure number by almost 2 units, which research suggests may reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems by 20 percent."

Yes!  Pomegranate juice is availabe in regular grocery stores!!!  And this gives me an excuse to buy some.  It is not in the juice section.  It's called Pom.  It's in a really cool bottle...kind of like two or three spheres stacked on one another.  I have always seen it in the produce section.  Usually it's chilled there.  I've had it once or twice when friends have bought it and shared...yum!
