I have experienced two episodes of extreme spikes in blood pressure 210/110 brought on by extreme stress over a prolonged period. (these episodes were two years apart. In between my blood pressure is normal. the second episode was last week. Nitro brought the pressures down. Had a full work up done in emergency including a stress test. Everything is now normal again 116/70. Stress test and electrocardiogram all normal.

Docs just want me to watch it and go back to outpatients if it starts going up again.

Anyone have experience with this kind of blood pressure problem. What's the key?

I'm wondering whether I should have anything on hand at home to bring BP down, should it spike like this again.

I would guess that you were treated with NTG for the high BP as the ER physician was ruling out any cardiac problems and wanted to bring your BP down quickly not knowing if you were having a cardiac event.

I would ask your Dr. if he feels you need anything to keep on hand at home.  Most patients with hypertension are on a regularly scheduled BP medication.

If you have been under extreme stress then perhaps the key is in bringing down your stress level which would help control your BP.  I know that is easier said then done.

I wish you the best and good to see you posting here.

Kindly,

Kitt
